Have you ever repainted old skiis?

hey guys:

This weekend I got a pair of used volkl 5 stars ($40!) and though the base and edges are all in fine shape, the top is a bot scratched up. I thought it might be fun to paint custom graphics on the skiis, and give them a unique look. They're just gonna be my rock skiis, so it doesn't really matter if they look funky. Anyone ever done this? Any words of wisdom? Thanks!

I've actually though about this sort of thing. It's funny that nobody has made a business of selling aftermarket decals to put on your topsheets that would give skis a unique look.

I have a friend who repainted his Scratch FS's and another friend who repainted his old 1080s but didn't take the bindings off...

A big problem is that few paints make a good bond with plastic, so it will never be as durable a finish as the stock finish. However, I think your best bet would be an acrylic paint. Also, make sure to take the bindings off and mask everything you don't want paint on, like edges and base.

There was a company who made topsheet decals. They sold the decals by the roll in the 80's. Ski Saver, I think. I remember seeing it in purple fluorescent leopard print. They even sold clear rolls so you could preserve your own stickers. My old college skis were home made Jerry Garcia skis made with end to end tie-dye bumper stickers and clear ski saver over them.

birdman,
thank you. that is a fantastic link!

Now all I've got to do is remove my bindings (which I've never done before) and try to figure out a nice design! It won't have that smooth finish because fo the actual ski, but I hope to make it look good. Thanks!

Have you ever repainted skis yourself? The volkl 5 stars have a strange textured finish on the topsheet and I was wonderin gif you had any thoughts on removing that so the paint will stick.... Just a long shot, but if you've painted ski sbfore perhaps you would have a thought? Otherwise, thanks again for the useful thread you pointed me to.
