’05 Rossi 9X 185 w/ RKi plate (Y51)

USSA Masters, NASTAR

I put the “Speed Plate” on my ’06 9Xti’s to get a bit more “beef” under foot (what’s on the Rossi speed skis). This season, however, I am sporting at least 25 less pounds going into the season and haven’t been on skis yet. Things may feel totally different, don’t know. I got the 191 for Master races as I felt I need a bit more “ski” under foot on the big hills. My ’05 9X are a bit stiffer than my ’06 Snub nose. The ’05 is a little more stable, the ’06 initiates very easily. The ’07 191 has both quickness and stability – best of all worlds for me.

Oh yeah, U.P. Racer’s right. The B-Squad (Rossi’s offering for the 104 under foot off piste ski) is basically the same construction as the race ski. It carves like a B^tch and is WAY more fun than the skinny sticks in the pow and crude (on the 194 and have the 188 B3, also a fun ski). Skied the deep and steep at the Bird for the first time in a long time this last spring. Mind blowing how easy they make it and yes, you can arc ‘em on the groomers – just shocking :

Have you tried the 04 or 05 189? How does it fit into the scheme of Rossi GS skis?

That's the "190" that Rick's on. The '04/05 Y51 is a nice ski. Its the same construction as the 185 Y51 (r=24) with a 26 Meter side cut (r=26.1). The big difference between any of the prior to '06 Rossi GS ski is the snub nose. The SN initiates much quicker, especially on the longer skis. The construction is pretty much the same. The '06 and '07 version may have a slightly thicker metal (and I believe they went to Titinal in '06) top sheet and may be a little bit more damp but with the snub nose you need it. The '07 191 is still has a 26 meter side cut but because of the snub nose and softer flex it skis a bit shorter than the older 190's (189) which didn't like to go into a <23 meter turn. Edit; Thinking about it I remember skiing the Nordica K12 (I believe were 188cm) when I was on that year Rossi. The Nordica was very docile, almost hard to get into the turn but very predictable once you got there. My 189 '04/05 Rossi's were considerably more "alive". They've got plenty of pop for a longer GS ski - in other words.

Would you say they feel considerably longer than the 185 from the same year? From your description, I feel like I may have gotten myself in over my head with these. Just to clarify, the new 191's actually feel shorter?

I'm coming off some 185 Volkl P60's, which don't seem to do much, and I have tried last season's 191 Atomic, which seemed long at first but definitely performing for me. I hope these 189's will be okay... I had a pair of 194 Salomons from 2002 maybe, and they felt like driving a boat...

Yup, the new 191 definitely cranks a tighter turn, at least for me. As for you being over your head on the 189? Nah. Especially if you've been on the 191 Atomic.

The won't feel like boat (that's like those Nordicas I was talking about, the newer Dobies are much better) they've got life to them. But they do ski noticeably longer than the 185's. At least mine did. Also, the P60's are/were planks (Race Tiger, much improved) compared to the Rossi, so again, sounds like you're in good shape.

Volkl Mantra, Dynastar legend pro, Head IM88, Stockli Stormrider DP, or Rossignol B-Squad.
The IM88 is great in those conditions but I prefer the Metron B5 for anything but wide open bowls.

You are mentioning a freakin' METRONS in a thread about real skis??? We are talking about race stock GS skis and big mountain rippers. I think you meant to be in this forum:

Absolutely! I'd hate to tackle those wide open bowls of the UP on anything less than a battleship of a ski! Poor Max is confined to this sort of place

I wouldn't use Metrons for any purpose.

and this, from a different poster:
I would consider it a wasted day if I had to spend it on race skis in the conditions you mentioned.
.
Man, you guys are really uptight about your gear.

Maybe the best day of powder I ever had in my life was on slalom skis at Jackson Hole. Imagine it: most of the mountain closed for two days before for a whale of a storm, hardly anyone there when it all opens, run after run of open powder, and busting the snow off low hanging spruce boughs below. Not really a wasted day.

The slalom skis? 205 Kastle RX, 85-65-75. Point'em down 'til they float and start cranking some turns!

Okay, had that experience too. Got to Jackson, the whole mountain was an ice block. I think this was somewhere around '75 or so. The night we got in it started snowing, and snowing, and snowing. 7 feet in the next 3 days. My pow skis were Rossi 207's (don't remember which model). SNORKEL

Ah! Then in 1990 I was staying Cliff Lodge at Bird. Lived in LA then. The night before we were to leave it started snowing. An avalanche closed BC and we "had to stay". The mountain gave us a free pass and opened only Peruvian. It was me and one other guy from Vermont. We were both racers on our 207's. SNORKEL

But know, I'd rather be on a destroyer than a submarine (if I ever get in those conditions again). Oh, CRAP - OT!! Yeah, yeah, GS boards,,, I'm on those probably 80 plus percent of the season (Slalom/SuperG making up another 15%) - and I live in Park City (U.P. in mock horror)

I'm just a lazy skier. I really do like the IM88 (one of my favorite skis), but I find them to be too much work in the trees and bumpy stuff, but up top where its wide open, yeah, they are ton of fun.

I thought I was going to be happy this season with the pair of 176cm Salomon Equipe GC's I picked up over the summer.

Then, yesterday, I read this thread.

When I was done, I went and bought the 184cm Dynastar Course Speeds that Bob Peters was selling.

I had no more money - yet I felt I had no alternative.

I don't know whether to hate all of you, or to hug you.

That's awesome. I was considering the same pair of skis but decided they were a tad long for me. Plus I'm lazy, I'll probably start training GS on cheaters and move up if I have to.
I bought 186 Nordica Dobermann GSR's, so we'll see how that goes.
Max, I think my wallet is posessed and trying to kill me. Only a few days before deciding on Bob's skis, I also picked up a pair of Fischer WC SL's on eBay. My wallet says, "Feed me," but then as soon as I do, it spits it back at me and says in a demonic voice, "Buy more skis now."

I'm scared.

Max, try the M82's. they are halfway between the Metron and the M88. You will like them.

I've skied them. They are ok. I don't like them as much as the Metron B5s for tight spots or as much as the IM88 for bowls.

Speed is like a drug, CM. You're going to love the skis, you're going to love the speed, and then you're going to lust for more. Soon your habit will send you to the street, seeking an even stronger fix. Pssst,,, hey buddy,,, ya got any SG's?
Exactly! I have a pair of 195 Atomic SG's. They are too short.
6' 200 lbs.

Rossi 9X 183cm Y45 (which I am told is 26m radius) with Speedplate.

You should hug us. Those are nice skis with a huge sweet spot.

Ok, I'm getting race ski envy now.

Too true!!

You guys are all crazy.

Don't you know that it's not possible to ski on anything with a waist of less than 90mm anymore?

Race skis.

Pah!
