Avalanche Jam

I know that there are a number of readers here who ski in the Colorado backcountry. And also a number of readers here that use the Colorado Avalanche Information Center's (CAIC) weather forecasts during the winter. I thought you'd like to hear about the up coming AVALANCHE JAM fundraiser for the CAIC.

(July 9, 2003) Backcountry Access (BCA) announced today that Afro-Cuban sensation, THE MOTET, will headline the September 5 "AVALANCHE JAM" fundraiser for the Colorado Avalanche Information Center (CAIC).

The second annual AVALANCHE JAM will take place from 5 to 10 pm Friday, September 5 outside the American Mountaineering Center in Golden, Colorado. In addition to THE MOTET, it will include a wild Alaskan salmon dinner, beer from New Belgium Brewery, an outdoor industry demo village and door prizes. Donors to the silent auction include BCA, Lowe Alpine, Cloudveil, Marmot, Patagonia, Burton, Tua, Suunto and K2 Snowboarding. Tickets are $30 in advance and $35 at the gate.

Last year's first annual AVALNCHE JAM netted $10,000 for the CAIC, which provides avalanche education and forecasting for Colorado backcountry users. The CAIC is partially funded by the Colorado Department of Transportation and Colorado Ski Country, and a non-profit fundraising entity called Friends of the CAIC, comprised mainly of backcountry recreationists.

"Not only is it great to have this new source of revenue, but it's really great to know you have this kind of grassroots support," said CAIC director Knox Williams. He said AVALANCHE JAM funds will provide CAIC with the cushion it needs to improve its programs in the face of tighting budgets among its other supporters.

The staff of the CAIC will be on hand at the AVALANCHE JAM. We look forward to meeting you at the AVALANCHE JAM.

I know a majority of the Barking Bear readers don't ski in the backcountry. But, a number of Barking Bear readers use the Colorado Avalanche Information Center(CAIC) weather forecast's each winter. The AVALANCHE JAM is the major fundraiser for the CAIC each year. I'd really like to encourage the Barking Bear readers to show their support of the CAIC, by attending the AVALANCHE JAM.

Here is an update about the up coming AVALANCHE JAM.

You will start to see AVALANCHE JAM posters being put up around Colorado this week. We really want folks to start telling their friends about the JAM and to start ordering their tickets. You'll save $5 if you ordder your tickets in advance.

Here is a list of sponsors that have made contributions to the silent auction and for door prizes. The folks in the outdoor industry have really steped up to the plate with their donations this year. There will be some big scores on gear this year.

Backcountry Access
Lowe Alpine
Tracker DTS
Volant skis
Mountain Hardware
Silverton Mountain
North Face
Couloir Magazine
Black Diamond
Arapahoe Basin
Suunto Watchs
Backcountry Magazine
La Sportiva
Walker's Gallery

The AVALANCHE JAM would not be possiable without the major support of BCA, New Belgium Brewing, Kodiak Island Salmon, The American Alpine Club, The American Avalanche Association and Wholefoods.

Please check out these websites for more information. If you have never seen the CAIC's website take a look, it's a great resourse for all skiers.

or go directly to the BCA website at:

Hope to see you at the AVALANCHEJAM!
