The Ridge is worth the hike, but for slackers there's always Slausman's (pronounced Slushman's).

See the Bridger Bowl page for more info.

FWIW, I visited Bridger Bowl for 2 days when I was coming back from ESA Big Sky a few years ago.  I absolutely loved the place and want to get back there soon!

Guess I should formally introduce myself, rather than just demanding answers to my questions.

Grew up in NH, started skiing at 5 or so.  Stopped skiing in HS, and didn't pick it up again until after graduating college and moving to NJ 10 years later.  I ski all around the Northeast, wherever I can find a good deal.  All my family and a lot of friends are still in NH, so it's easy to go up for a weekend and day trip to different mountains.

Joined this forum mainly because I'm planning on going out West for the first time, and I'm looking for a little help/direction.

Welcome St Bear!

Hope you find all the direction you're looking for, even if it takes you on an adventure that you least expect!

One warning St Bear . . . once you go out west to ski, it's habit forming.  I was lucky enough to get a taste when a friend invited me to Alta in 8th grade.  Hardly wanted to ski anywhere else after that since I didn't have the time or the money for trips out west for a few decades.  Only gave the Southeast another chance when my daughter was old enough for ski school.  Now I've completely spoiled her since she's already been to Alta three times at age 10. rolleyes.gif

EpicSki is a good place to ask questions.

I guess this should have been my first post, but whatever... I'm 30 years old, straight outta Quebec, been skiing here (in Quebec) for most of my life, I briefly got lost in my teens riding a snowboard.. but got I quickly got back on skis once the hype faded...

I'm planning a father and son 6-day ski trip in the Canadian rockies mid feb 2012—probably Revelstoke, but still hesitating among Fernie and Kicking Horse—that's what brought me here in the first place, I read a lot useful information and discovered a friendly community

Hello from South Florida

I'm 40 years old but only caught the ski bug (but I have it bad) in early 2010 and am gearing up for my 4th trip.  I can get down pretty much any groomer, ok sometimes not so graceful, but when I get comfortable I love to go fast fast fast.  This year I want to work on my rhythm and take powder/bump lessons. I joined partly to look for ski buddies as most of my friends are either busy or broke biggrin.gif

Welcome all y'all!

Hello All,

After ten years off Alpine boards, I'm finally back on the wagon.

I grew up skiing in the Berkshires - Butternut, Jiminy Peak - with occasional trips to Southern VT, mostly Mt. Snow and Killington, with a few days at Bromley, Magic, and Stratton thrown in.  It was on one of those Stratton trips in the mid-80's that saw my first snowboard, and learned now to ride from then-and-now giants of the sport (Chris Karol et al.)  Throughout high school and college, I split my time pretty evenly between alpine skis and snowboarding, spending most of the season in New England (my home mountain during my college years was Sugarloaf/USA), with spring break trips to either Utah or Colorado.

After college, I tried my hand at several responsible and irresponsible endeavors, picked up telemark skiing, traded my soft snowboard boots for hardshell ones, and started to neglect my Alpine roots.  I pro-dealed my last pair of skis in 1997; I haven't been on them since 2001.  Sadly, this was not because I was spending more time on the hill with a snowboard or tele skis; graduate school and life happened, and skiing became less and less of a priority...until this year.

With my 40th birthday looming next summer, I find myself at a crossorads, both personally and professionally.  I have a lot of shit to work through, and to do that, I need to get my head clear.  In retrospect, those moments of clarity have most often come with two boards strapped to my feet, heels locked in place.

So, this morning, I headed down to one of the last and biggest ski swaps of the season, and gave myself an early Christmas present - a gently-used pair of AC50's.  My ten-year-old boots still fit, and they have less than ten days on them, so I think I will hang onto them until something cracks, which may or may not be in the very near future.

My next task is to sort out lift passes - where, what kind, etc.  A Bash Badge at Smuggs seems like the most economical choice, given the number of days I'll likely be able to get in this season, but with Jay so tantalizingly close...

Anyway, I have found other online forums to be an excellent resource for information, insight, humor, and even support.  I hope my experience here will be much the same.

Looming 40th Birthday?

Be careful, I joined about 10 months before my 40th Birthday, with crossroads in the short distance(In Michigan).......FF 6 years later, I'm living at Lake Tahoe, work in the ski industry, and LOVE the life of a ski bum!

This is what happens when you get the itch and there's a crossroads in your sight!

Welcome!

Thanls for the heads-up ;)

Actually, I put in my time ski-bumming and in outdoor retail before I went back to school.  Loved the lifestyle, hated the paycheck.  Still have the chops, so it might be an option on the side if I ever wanted pro deal access again, but I still have a lot of friends in the industry, and my new-gear fetish has toned down quite a bit.

Greetings, I guess I ought to introduce myself.

I am a 26 year old male Army Officer living in Northern Virginia, only have been skiing the past two winters, can't wait to hit the slopes this winter.  I am lucky enough to be married to a beautiful woman who has been skiing since she was 4 so trying to keep up with her on the blacks and the bumps is helping me get improve.  I am taking the plunge and buying gear this winter so I hope to be able to hit the slopes more frequently.  This winter my skiing will be confined to the Mid-Atlantic and the Northeast, but I hope to move to the West sometime in the next 18 months, getting orders to the duty station of choice is a little bit of a crap shoot so I could end up in Texas or Georgia.

This is a great site with tons of info, I've enjoyed lurking and reading all the reviews and forums, I'm looking forward to all of the advice and discussions.

I'm a new member to this site.

My name is Andy and I am a recent convert from tele skiing to the "darkside" of AT. I live and work in Yosemite and spend the entire winter wishing I were on the Eastern Sierra when ski season rolls around... That is except when I'm working, I'm an outdoor educator.

I'm a noob still but hoping to get some more skills and technique down this winter.

cheers,

ae

Hey all!  New member here.  Found the site while looking for gear reviews and got sucked in.

Little about me - Been skiing since I was 12.  Grew up in Pittsburgh, PA skiing Seven Springs.  Spent some time in the NY/NJ area and did the VT ski house share for several years, then moved to NC for grad school and stayed.  That's put a bit of a crimp in the skiing.  Though we do have skiing here, it's just enough to keep me from going insane.  Have a couple of kids who have learned to ski in the past few years, so I am gradually getting more days on snow, though this season has been rough.  Looking forward to taking them on their first trip to CO this spring.  Hoping that blows their mind and I can get them fully obsessed.

I'm also psyched because I'm getting a few days in Utah next month added onto a work trip.  As of now, I'm gonna be solo so hoping to meet up with some people from the board.

Welcome!  How old are your kids?  Boys or girls?  I'm a New Yorker who settled in the Triangle area decades ago.  Have spoiled my fifth grader by taking her to Alta to meet up with friends in April for several years in a row.

Mine are 7 (girl) and 9 (boy). They've mostly skied at Wintergreen. Heading to Beaver Creek for break. We'll be working them up to Alta.

With kids that age, I suggest you give Massanutten a try some time.  Great ski school, family friendly layout with no lift lines at the top for the two black runs.  While the Highlands are great, being able to never wait in line and ski under lights means a lot more fun time on the show on weekends, even holiday weekends.  Plus lots of other things to do at Mnut if the skiing isn't the greatest for a weekend trip.  Not much longer a drive than Wintergreen, with no need to worry about snow on a mountain road.

Took my daughter on her first trip to Alta when she was 8.  First first season was at Mnut when she was 4.  She was able to ski SE black runs at Mnut and Beech but was happier on blues.  She had a ball at Alta.  The ski school had her hunting powder on the edges of the groomed blues after one day. cool.gif

We're in Chapel Hill and can get to Wgreen in about 3 hrs. flat.  What's the delta to Mnut?

It's about 45 min longer to Mnut.  Well worth it for a weekend trip, especially on holiday weekends.  Assuming you don't like standing in lift lines.  Send me a PM if you want to know more.  We have season passes and spent the last three weekends there.  Way better conditions than expected given the way things were in Dec.

I checked more carefully and figured out that my daughter's first trip to Alta when when she was 7, not 8.

Hey guys! enkidu here. I'm an intermediate/advanced skier (level 7-8 according to the chart) who's been off the slopes for a while but have recently gotten back in my new (carefully fitted) boots. Having a great time on the slopes and will probably have lots of questions about what type of skis to get.

Doh! double posted.

welcome enkidu!

Got a helmet? (just kidding....don't answer...please!)

Just introducing myself.  I just moved from Georgia to Alaska last August, which now I am Wasilla. Im 22 and love all outdoor activities. I used to skydive and BASE jump but put that on hold for a while. I took my first ski lesson on Sunday and I am going for another one this Friday, which has already gotten me addicted. Still getting used to the snow and cold weather! take care

Wow sbarker,  Georgia to Alaska, eh? Where do you ski near Wasilla?

I have only been to the base so far. For a hour and a half lesson, rental, and lift it was only 50 bucks. I took another one today and I'm hopefully going to either hilltop or arctic valley on sunday, which are both right outside of Anchorage I'm told. And yes GA to AK was a big change, but I just graduated from college and figured what better time to move across the country!
