I know on many forums, there is a section for people to introduce themselves but did not see any certain place. Anyways a little about myself, my skiing experience, and goals.
My name is Ryan Tombs and I am 20 (well september 23rd I will be) from NJ. I currently go to school at Oklahoma State University. Due to my program, 1 yr out of my two year program I spend in the field. So far I have worked in NJ, NY, PA, TX, WY, UT, CO. Next August I graduate and will hopefully be working in NJ or CO (hate houston). I am a person who likes to ski but not that adventurous one who wants to test his limits, I like just going down and enjoying the view. I am not into seeing how quick I can get down, how hard I can turn, getting to the biggest slope etc. I
My experience: I first tried snowboarding about 10 years ago (jesus I feel old) sadly, it did not work out very well as I saw my brother skiing easily right by me. So next trip around 12 yrs old I took a ski lesson and was able to do a green or two (both of these at elk mountain in PA). Fast forward to 19yrs old. Last winter I skied 5 days total (2 at blue mountain PA, 1 at mountain creek NJ, and 2 at jay peak vermont). I am a very conservative skiier not wanting to test my abilities and at one blue mountain trip and both days at Jay I was with a friend who is a decent skier who was able to push me along on tougher slopes (after I took my lesson and he took his). I can now (or atleast last winter) confidently ski greens on Jay and most blues I do not mind skiing down up in Jay (mind you jay peak is vastly different from blue mountain by philly).
That leaves me to this yr. Sadly, I will only be home from November 1 to Jan 6 (most NE slopes open mid December really). I am going back to Jay for atleast 2 days of skiing with my buddy (his grandfather has a house 20 minutes from Jay). I would like to go back to elk atleast once due to remembering how it was a more small local skiier oriented slope compared to mountain creek (which was terrible I might add). And Blue mountain is a favorite of me, my buddy, and another friend (slowboarder).
My goal this yr for purchases: Is to buy boots fitted from a shop (from reading it seems if you get good boots you can have wood planks for skies and you can tackle anything), and take private lessons (only have done group, while small it still took away time from me and up in jay I was in a beginner class that already knew the basics but was ahead of everyone else), I have $30 dicks sporting goods goggles which have been great for me so far (I rent a helmet), my personal helmet (it just makes sense), and then outer wear- jacket (one I have now is too flashy as in plaid jacket and it doesnt fit me well), special ski socks (wear regular ones, only one pair though, and I do not tuck even long johns into my boots), and better pants/ overalls (current ones were spur of the moment we are going to jay peak cheapy purchase) (hopefully can get out for around $1k)
My goal for performance increase: be able to tackle all blues up in jay, and have confidence in my abilities, also to refine my skiing to be more mechanically sound.
I will be for sure making new threads on boots, good local ski shops, and the clothing. I have been lurking for a bit but time to jump in as the season is nearing!
