On a more serious note .... a rare moment ...
There are few jobs in the industry that would attract me at all. I have watched too many guys/gals, struggling "in the trenches", at what seem like attractive "jobs" for the young and old. Some examples from guys I've talked to:
Some factory reps from the demo crews at the hill commented that they never get to ski. Get there early and set the tent, work all day and then lug the gear and pack the van and ..... drive three hours to the next stop.
Another guy I know chips away at being a wax rep and sunglasses
: rep. He never quite seems to be in the $$$ and just hangs in there. Demo the wax and irons at the hill to the race kids and moves on .. He used to be a good fitter and shop tech but was hardly making it.
Another ski rep/distributor ... every year "This is my last" ... more time than money for putting up with the financial crap each time there is a "corporate shift in policy".
Instructor .... read my prior posts.
"Greeter or Mountain Ambassador" .... no pay but you get to ski for free after you walk around pointing to the rest rooms and rental shop.
"Ranger" ..... not bad if you have a thick skin and can work for PA minimum wage. At least you are out on the hill and get a free ticket for each shift (unlike instructors who get nothing). And, you aren't at the bottom pushing level one classes all day.
Line Boss ... or "Assistant SSD" .... getting to screw with the guys you once worked with as a management stooge does not float my boat.
About the only "industry job" that I can see would be running a shop or a B&B (as an owner), where I could hire and pick my free time to get out for perhaps those two or three hours at the opening of the lifts.
Coach of a race team ???? Good and bad news there too.
God bless those who started young and have endured to find some place where they have a level of comfort and are not beholden to "The Mountain" for income. Instructors like Nolo, who have their "own book" and can write their own terms are the exception; at least in these parts.
