User count a little off?

Hmm--At 10:30 pm this evening, the "currently online' counter shows the following message:

Currently Active Users: 1704 (259 members and 1445 guests)
Most users ever online was 1, December 31st, 1969 at 04:00 PM.

1704 online would be a new record, I believe, and shatter the previous record, although it's not impossible.
But what's going on with "most users ever" being 1, in 1969?

Nobody's logging off tonight either...

HMM..

I was going to do an up grade tonight but I'm going to hold off due to the numbers.

As far as the numbers,

A few months ago we decided to turn off the "total users online" counter so it would not show up on the front page... I'm wondering if thats when the system reverted the counter setting to that 1969 date. The previous date was Jan 2006.

Still over 1400 users noted as being online. Only 171 members though.

I think it's been accurately reporting the "most users ever online" as a little over a thousand in January 2006 until very recently--last night was the first time I noticed the change.

Both the number of registered users and the number of guests currently online seem high all of a sudden. Season's coming (actually, it started half an hour ago at Arapahoe Basin), so there could be a spike in interest, but it doesn't seem right to me.

Best,
Bob

particularly off-season sports.

"58" in there a minute ago.

most i recall seeing in there at one time was never more than the high teens, and that's very rare.

Bug in a recent upgrade. I've reset the counter but it sounds like it might be an ongoing problem. Thanks for catching it..

oh boy!

That reset lasted about 1 minute!

We'll work on it..

We're up to 2004 online right now. You sure it's not some sort of attack?

Hope not!

The runaway numbers have to do with a change in the way the search engines are running. Most of the additional "users" are search engine queries.

we finally fixed the counter problem. It had to do with the 3.5 to 3.6 upgrade. One of the "hacks" we had installed was not compatible with the new 3.6 vbulletin.

Well done, DC!

So is the current record of 1161 users on October 18th accurate? It's pretty impressive!

Best regards,
Bob

You're not done yet. Take a look at doublediamond223's and MTT's birthday threads. We have pictures going to infinity width and requireing scrolling.

Nice to see big pics, but seriously flawed.
Here is an example (Thank you VA):

I think that was the broken hack...

No,

The broken hack that caused the counter problem was due to our desire to have the 10 most recent posts on our www.epicski.com page.

I'll look into the image resize hack..

Thanks for the catch..

It's impressive but not accurate.

I don't know if we will ever truely know what the record is.. It's based on a "window" of time. The hack that broke also had set the time window to 4 hours which is what broke the counter problem. By fixing first the counter, then the 4 hour window being set to 30 minutes that was the number left.. The other problem with that counter number is that it includes spiders and bot's from google, yahoo, inktomi, etc and depending on how much they are mining the web, will push this number up.. I turned off showing them in the who's online page but the total members using the page at any given time is generally 25 percent of the total..

It's a number.. That's all.

Thanks for the explanation, DC. Interesting stuff.

So you're suggesting that 75% or more of the "guests" online at EpicSki are "search bots"?! Wow!

More than a suggestion.
I can filter my view of it and it's pretty consistant.
