Al's Ski Barn? Good place to buy?

When looking for my first ever set of skis/bindings, I came across Al's Ski Barn http://www.untracked.com/

Is this a quality site? Good place to buy from?

Any other recommended sites I should check out for good deals?

In completely self serving fashion, I might suggest the following.........

I've bought from SJ, have directed friends to him. He'd be my first pick; also have heard many good things about Dawgcatching's place. Ski Depot is good for great deals on some lines.

That said, I've bought a bunch of skis from Al's, back to my first online purchase. They're reliable, are willing to discuss nuances like mounting position and they have the best selection of hard to find new skis from previous years. But you'll pay a bit more there for some models.

Alpine Sports Outlet

Might try AlpineSportsOutlet.com as well.

My experience great with the barn. Perhaps mentioned, but great folks to talk to directly when ordering vs. click to cart (they are in Portland, Maine). Last purchase was '07 Rossi 140 Ti Pros WB shipped without problem and $100 off list. I will continue to support these folks. Good luck.

SJ, I just now recall a thread where you checked on some issue with '07 B3's requiring a serial number chase. Based upon your quick turnaround with the posted question, I gather you just walked from your keyboard to the rack. I'll save the site above, certainly will check your shop out for future needs.

I now have a workstation about 30' from the ski rack......: (no mean feat in a 20K sq. ft. store)

I just whined and stomped my feet until the owner relented..........

I bought my Volkl AC3s from them.

Service was great.

Shipped promptly.

Great communication.

They even mounted the bindings. Had my ski shop test everything out. Fit my boots how they were supposed to, and even set properly for me.

I have shopped from many places, several of them listed here (all been good). Al's Ski Barn has always had the best service -- they even bailed me out when an order from another vendor went wrong and I got bindings with no mounting plates. Al's got me the plates in 2 days with free shipping before the other shop could even respond to me and offer a refund for the missing parts. Al's customer service is fast and always excellent. Their prices are usually higher than other places, but their free shipping over $45 often cancels price differences.

Both Al's and Ski-Depot.com are 2 days away from me with ground shipping. But I have gotten great deals/service from SJ and Dawg, and it's usually worth the week wait for shipping from the opposite coast. Both SJ and Dawg are quick to respond here, and I appreciate that (although Dawg's PM inbox is full right now, as usual!). Ski-depot.com is not good about answering e-mails in my experience, but buying directly off their site works OK.

Bottom line -- can't go wrong with any of these shops, and yes, Al's is good!

But if you call them (Ski-Depot), you will get great service. Their prices are hard to beat and their servce is top notch. Ski-Depot is a true B&M, not an internet storefront. They just happen to sell on the internet also and so perhaps they don't spend as much time online as the stores that do internet-only sales.

I visited Al's when they had a shop in Freeport, ME. Great guys there, always willing to offer advice and find great deals for cheapskates like me.

You can't go wrong with either one of these outfits. The raves for Dawg and SJ on this forum also speak volumes.

I ordered some skis from Al's for my son last week. I had typoed my CC number and they called me within the hour to get the correct number. The skis were shipped the same day. Excellent service!

I love Al

This place rocks. Cheap prices, free mounting and shipping. Great service, I messed up on my boot size and they called to confirm. Shipped in 3 days.

Excellent folks! They do what they say they are going to do, when they say they are going to do it, and were quite accommodating of a couple of special requests I threw at them. A real pleasure to do business with.
