Skis with 80mm+ waist and 14m or less radius? - Page 2

Not going to try to talk you out of the sidecut thing, but I am going to suggest a pair of Volant Spatulas because you are looking for a deeper snow tree ski.
I honestly do not think you can find a better tree ski. The reverse camber causes them to be extremely manueverable and I think this is what you are after when you are looking for a tight radius.
I'm not saying you're wrong, just suggesting that what you are looking for can also be found in a different package.

My B5s have a 131mm shovel and they don't bother me in the slightest. My stance widens as required for the skis I'm on. I doubt 140mm would be much different.

I already ski my B5s in the trees so I know this is the shape I want. I'm after more float for the big powder days that flatten out the mountain creating a situation where I can't get enough speed to get the B5s floating.

Max has started an interesting thread IMO. I will say a finding a radius in the teens for a powder ski that delivers SL behavior while maintaining float at a more reduced speed runs counterintuitive for me or rather, I don't have that experience. As you speak to rockered skis RJP, my ability to deal with tight radius conditions of trees and powder is working an even finer balance and improving deft carve/slide technique where side cut, for me, is less of a concern. Now having said all that, as usual, I'm learning about wider SL skis and radius considerations for trees and deep...not a bad education for the price of admission. And yes, those Spatulas are nice.

Having skied a lot of tight trees in powder on everything from 210s to shorter fatties over the years, I think a soft ski (particularly a soft tailed ski) will prove mored stable and manueverable in deep snow. When things don't quite work out on a turn it is nice to have the option to rear back and turn off the tails. Having two chances at every turn gives you a little better margin of error when you have to pull a turn out of your a$$ in order to avoid a tree.

I have never tried the Spatulas but have heard repeatedly that they are the best powder tree ski. They have the ability to go from fast to stopping on a dime like no other skis.

Ok. Gotta love a man that knows what he wants.

Regarding RJP's point:
I never tried any of the progressive shapes and designs so I can't say that they wouldn't be the as good or better way to skin the tight turn powder cat, but I would wonder about straying that far from carving technigue (with the smears etc.) and creating bad habits for the hardpack. ?

Yes, ZAG would be an obvious choice. I did demo a 84 once and fund it to float at a very low speed and to be very easy to turn in tight spots.
I didn't mentioned it because they're bankrupt.
Now, at a discounted price for one of the remaining pairs, warranty concerns maybe secondary.
