Love some of the Spanish reds also some of the reds from Chile. Try a Carmenere from Chile they are wonderful.

I'd never heard of Barleywines until this post. The first micro-breweries opened up in this country about four years ago and only recently (within the past few months) have they become available outside the capital (or in other words available to me as I don't live there). Just so happened that when I was at the store tonight there is a new micro-brewery and they make a barley wine. Also the first I've seen IPA's available here. Picked up both to try (Treintaycinco Micro-Brewery, San José, Costa Rica).
This was an American style. To me it tasted like a cross between an IPA and a brown ale.
