I won't claim to be an expert in biomechanics, though I did take a couple courses during university. I would second the recommendation for heel lift inserts inside your boot. As along as you have the ability to flex your boots, the heel lift should force your weight forward.

I went to a physio therapist who does postural reconstruction. I suffered from repetitive strain problems and also problems with the clavicle/shoulder from a car accident.

Thru a series of postures held while deep belly breathing she can straighten you up, change how you walk and apparently even minimize bow legs.

I found that after several sessions, I stood so straight that I felt like I was falling over backwards. It also changed how I walked on my feet. Not pronated as much.

It's rather neat, and it probably could change the duck foot thing. It might be worth checking into if you wish to change things.

I actually think that my years of swimming have influenced my gait/stance more than anything. However runway walking requires you to walk heel to toe in a tightrope fashion with your chin up and shoulders down and back. Pelvis is thrust forward. Your arms do swing some.

Couple all that with competitive show jumping where your upper body movement must be kept in balance with the horse (not in-front of or behind the motion) and I guess you get a pretty good recipe for skiing.

Skiing definitly has changed the way i walk. In more of an attitude way, than the actual mechanics. And during ski season than off-season. I seem to have a little cockyness to my walk during ski season.
I guess its something you develop after many years of diverse skiing. Skiing down one or many trails, at various different mountains dosen't change your walk. Its skiing down numerous mountains, hills, off your porch, through your back woods, through your neigbors woods, over roads... and many other wild escapades on skis, when you can say that your walk has changed do to skiing!!
Not everyone has done what i have explained, but "to change your walk" you have to acknowledge something that you have done on skis, that is not in the norm.

Mmmm. There's really very little difference in the body's alignment and movement between alpine geared skiers and telemark turning skiers. If we're talking upper body movement only, then there should be no difference between the two barring just the individual differences you find from one person to another.

To unlock the robotic upper body stance, try pointing the top of your uphill pole's handle like a flashlight in the fallline's direction as you check with the other pole. This will open the distance between your elbow and torso and keep your upper body ever so slightly dynamic. It's kinda like the opposition movement you do when walking and swinging (natural swing!) your arms. That pole/hand movement also keeps you from dragging your pole in the turn.

I saw Hugh at Aspen a few seasons ago. I says: Hugh, brotha, you couldn't buy a turn if you needed one. Hugh said: But I just bought a turn with...
The kid's all confused.

Hey Sugar Snack, I swam competively from 5 - 18 yrs. (back/breast/IM) and I competed in jousting. You're like my twin except for the runway thing ...I was a hand model : Uhhh, mens watches, yea, watches, that's it.

Oboe, the heel lifts can help you get forward, but I'd suggest finding a recognized alignment expert to help you get your boots set up for maximum performance.

Alternatively, you could consult a therapist about your walk habits. I improved my foot placement and landing impact during coached treadmill therapy after having an Achilles tendon reattached. I used to splay out a little and thump my heels more, and I tended to flex at the waist to balance. I've learned to walk with straighter feet, and I think that's made it easier for me to move my hips forward to center up my weight on skis.

have become acutely aware of "edge changes" while walking, rolling the feet from outside to inside (the arch)in direction changes. how when i am turning left down a hallway the first movement to the left is a simultaneous unweighting of the left foot and plant/push with the right, left hand leading the way.
i try to brush the corners with just a trace of shirt fabric as i keep the line but sometimes BIFF, heavy shoulder/wall contact and the run is killed.

also, i have taken to
standing with shoes stuck together, no space between them. i find i just feel more balanced and edge changing - leaning that far over to my desk - is supported by slight "edge" change (feet) and flexing/"leading" of the knees, like this: < <

Kneale Brownson, I do appreciate your input, but here's the scoop: I have been aligned nine ways to Sunday [a lot], but this is the first time I had the fore/aft computer thing done. Since my father before me walked this way and seeing that I am 60 years old and it's an effort to immitate a "normal" walk, I'm inclined to mess with the heel lift or some such thing. But thanks, I'll still give serious thought to all of the suggestions I'm receiving. This may sound odd, but what about raising the TOE or under the boot toe - that would cause me to ge my weight forward by resisting the backward tilt. Any thoughts onthis one?

Oboe, I was 56 when I was learning to walk with straighter foot placement. That was half a dozen years ago.

If you've got your boots "right" as far as a recognized stationary alignment expert is concerned, I'd look for one of the guys Warren Witherell trained (you're "out East" aren't you?) to do active alignments on the snow. They watch you ski and make corrective adjustments. I have a couple PSIA examiner friends who have described significant improvements from minor tweaking during a Witherell alignment.

Walk?! E-crissss, it's affected EVERYTHING I do. It's nearly impossible get'n outta bed in tha morn... standing up outta a chair has become an event... and get'n in a chair's almost as bad (how come they make toilets so low anyway??)... the first 1/4 mile of ma daily jog has become moreova 'hop/stagger'... sit'n in a car or plane w/out periodic stretches becomes a 3-ring performance to onlookers when I finally gotta move... afta tiling my bathroom floor last year my honey hadda drag me to the nearest couch... and now when I walk I try ta lay my feet down reeeal soft - like a cat - to avoid unnecessay jolts...
