Hi,

I would like to ask you something. I am very interested in buying the Mammut New Age jacket. I searched the epicski forums and found a thread where you said that you had some experience with it. I know that the Dryskin is an amazing fabric.
The Mammut New Age won the American Alpine Institute Guides' Choice Award in 2004.

There is a problem though and i hope you can shed some light on the subject. On the website of a german? magazine they say that after 3 washes, the jacket absorbed water like a sponge and was wet. Here is the link Please read the review and tell me if you agree with them. I know the jacket is neither waterproof nor windproof but in their opinion the 3XDry won't protect the jacket after 3 washes. At least that is the translation with babelfish.

So, did you have any problems with the jacket after 3 washes? I would like to get it but only if everything is ok. This would be my 2nd New Age jacket. My current New Age has seen very little use and i haven't washed it yet. I want to get a second jacket b/c it is very cheap and i won't have to look for another Dryskin jacket for a few years from now.

Thanks a lot!

The jacket performed very well for me but I only washed it 2 or 3 few times and then lost it (probably left it on the train coming back from St Anton). It was my fair-weather jacket and I always carried a shell for when it started raining / the wind picked up. On ski-touring ascents I was much dryer and commfortable in this jacket than any other.

It's strange because in their latest report this jacket won the softshells test
http://www.outdoor-magazin.com/laserlight.116612.htm and this jacket has dryskin too.

Maybe it's the waterproof covering on the jacket than fails and not the dryskin itself.

PS That German report dates back to 2003 and the jacket won awards/tests after that date.

Your post opened my eyes!

I looked closer at the jacket shown on the Outdoor Magazine site and i can tell you that it is not the same jacket. My jacket is the '05 model. The jacket they tested was the '04 model. Maybe they had a problem with the 3XDry treatment.

The New Age jacket won the award in 2004 so the jackets that won are the 2004/2005 models, not the 2003/2004 models. I'll get a second jacket.

First the magazine tested a pre-production model in 2002. Then they tested the first production model in 2003. So the model which had some problems was the 2003/2004 New Age (the first production jacket). Then the jacket won the award in 2004. My jacket is a 2004/2005 model.

Btw, which jacket did you have?

Thanks a lot Brian!

Same as you had (a 2004/05 model).
