Anyone know of a great place I can stay at a campground for extended stays? Thanks! Can't wait for the snow
You should check out this private RV campground place called "Sugarloafin'" on the way to Tuquoise Lake in Leadville. I have heard good things about this place and I believe it might be open year round.
You could possibly poach a place to park in the Leadville area. There are a lot of mining roads etc that no one really cares about..and some winters they are relatively snow free.
You can get a shower at the laundramat in town (by safeway)
You are about 20-30 minutes to Copper, 15 min to Cooper, 1 hour or so to Breck, 45 minutes to Vail.
Leadville is a real town with little or no resort influence. And it can be surprisingly mild in the winter..cold nights/sunny days..often located in the so called "Leadville Donut Hole" ie snowing everywhere else but sunny in Leadville.
You cannot drive directly to Fairplay in the winter..even in the summer it is a tough high clearance route (Weston Pass).
And unlike staying in Summit, getting to Copper from Leadville is a breeze..no I-70 traffic to deal with. You can get free internet at the CMC campus as well.
Leadville is pretty much a do your own thing kind of place..you should just bring your camper and figure things out..a great place to spend a ski season on your own terms IMO. There are also some really cheap rentals. I rented a 1 bedroom apt for $400.00 month for a couple of years. If you go that route make sure to ensure that the isulation is good and heat is included in the rent (like mine was) or there is a wood stove. Many places are pretty run down and old and it can get cold at 10,152'!
