Grayson had a ski school at Hyak for about 25 years. He had a cabin that is to the right of the Heidelberg water tower and also to the right and below Blowdown. I worked for Grayson for about 13 years (78 to 92) and had a lot of fun at Hyak. We spent many hours in the fall clearing brush and improving some regular runs and a few secret ones.
Heidelberg Tower...now that is REAL OLD SCHOOL. Nobody seems to remember that and I only learned about it a few months ago when Bill Romans had told me of the tower first being a Heidelberg Can. They re-did it this past year with the Olympia Beer logo.
I'll bet there were few cabins over on that side back in them days too. Mine was built in '71 so was one of the early ones.
Hey, do you know what years the snowmaking was done? I've been trying to track down information on that and many people remember skiing on it but no details.
BTW, what were the "secret runs"?
