Big Mountain, MT???

My NJ ski club is planning a trip out here in March, 2007, and I'm wondering about opinions of this resort. Is it a good place for a strong intermediate skier who likes lots of blue cruisers, occassional steeps, not a big bumps fan??? Seems like this is the only place in the area, unlike our previous trips to Park City and Tahoe.

Thanks for your .02...

Yes.. I live in Whitefish and ski TBM all the time (16 minutes from the mountain). There are really only 2-3 runs that stay moguled with no grooming: Marmot, Black Bear, and whatever run the free style team is using for training. Last year it was Heep Steep. The middle section of Mully's is allowed to bump up into smallish bumps but occasionally gets groomed out. There are tons of cruising trails. No Name is steep enough for most and is occasionally groomed. Those looking for thrills with no grooming and steeps can find this over on the East Rim and in sections of Hellroaring Basin or can hike to some areas best not advertised on the board.

Fernie is about 1 hour 45 minutes away. Blacktail (not in the same league as Big Mt or Fernie) is about an hour south of us.

I used to live in Hillsborough, by the way, just north of you.

From my 1 visit there a couple of years ago, I'd say the place is well suited to what you're looking for. It really is a Big place, even bigger than it looks from the base.

Thanks to all for your replies. Sounds like this could be another good club trip.

SibHusky, is Fernie worth trying to make a day trip? (And yes, Hillsborough is just a spit away!!!)

I have been told it is more than worth it. I keep planning to go, but it means gas and a lift ticket, and have never decided that it would be BETTER at Fernie. My daughter and her boyfriend want to do the trip over Christmas break though, so I will probably go this year. We did Blacktail last year because it was open an additional weekend. It was interesting but further than I expected. Given the distance, Fernie would be the better change of pace.

I like Big Mt. and Whitefish is a great town. But if your an expert and conditions are good, Fernie is a much better ski area.

I've always heard great things about Big Mountain, and it's definitely on my "to do" list. When I do, Fernie will be included in the trip for a few days.

I believe they run a shuttle/lift ticket package from Whitefish to Fernie. Check into it.

I skied Fernie two years ago, unfortunately in the worst conditions they have EVER had thanks to the Pineapple Express. The resort was literally closed 2 weeks before we went. Luckily they got snow before we arrived but it wasn't enough to open more than the "front" side. Good thing I was out of shape or I would have been even more POed!
