k2 recons vs volkl ac4

Thread Starter
Hi,
I am buying my bf skis for his birthday. I don't ski, but I know he is intersted in the apache recons and volkl ac4's.
could anyone please tell me what is the better deal:

1. 05/06 new k2 Recons w/o bindings for 650
2. 06/07 new Recons w/ bindings for 949
3. 06/07 new AC4's w bindings for 879 or 949 ( I can't remeber the price)
thank you so much. I am totally lost when all these people compare the ski design and steel vs foam vs wood core. which is a better ski / deal.

thank you for your comments

pm harkinbanks i know he had a pair of ac4s for sale w/ bindings for a good price.

Depending on how deep your pockets are I would go with the AC4

None of these three are a spectacular deal.

The '05-'06 K2 would allow you to buy a high(ish) end binding and get OTD for maybe $800 $825 + tax. Be cautious that this is a "flat ski" (meant to be sold without bindings) vs. a system ski that is missing the bindings. If the latter, you might have an issue finding a system binding to match up with it.

The two '07 models are "normal" prices for this time of year.

If he has his heart set on those models, then pay the freight. If not, there are other choices that ski very well.

thumper80, SierraJim is a dealer and could help you out, I'm sure. None of those are particularly good deals, as he mentions, and you may be able to find better on eBay or other places. But, given your level of knowledge, I'd encourage you to work with one of the trustworthy folks here on Epic to get what you need.

BTW, when will you be trying skiing? If he skis on those skis, you know that he's going to want you to try it... and if you get a solid start, you'll never look back!

I recently stopped by a local shop in the Northeast and noticed the 06/07 Recons w/ bindings for $799. That's $150 less than the price you were quoted.

You're not buying an ocean cruise or some other kind of vacation that's done and gone after you've paid for it - you're buying DURABLE GOODS that LAST. Most important: Forget the "best deal", because in durable goods the "best deal" will be the ones he likes and keeps. Unless you are able to get food stamps and welfare, the differences in price will be less important than getting something your bf will enjoy. However, DO pay attention to his height, weight and skiing experience and ability - because whatever you buy, that will determine the ALL IMPORTANT LENGTH of the skis. If the length is too long or too short, you may have wasted your money.

Today, almost ALL skis are good, and some are great. If you buy the skis in the appropriate length and your bf still doesn't like them after ten days of use, all is not lost - there is a market for such things!

My personal bias is the AC4, but the others also are terrific skis.

P.S. If the "cool" factor means anything to him, then it's the AC4 hands down. It is THE ski of the season.

P.P.S. And they're RED!

I'll let the other folks comment on the skis. But, You don't ski? Unless there is some great and extenuating circumstance you must give it a solid shot.

A great birthday present for him would be three days of lessons for yourself. You can then become one of us (or, is that a good thing?)

We don't know where you are, (however, a girlfriend who doesn't ski and is looking at NEW AC4's for her boy friend is well worth searching out.) but, I'm sure you can find a great instructor in these pages.

Believe me, I am a professional.

What does he ski now? What lenghth?
Let us know his size as in weight and heighth and maybe we can help you surprise him.
You do yourself proud with this fine thought of such a worthy gift. What a wonderful G.F. you are.
The new Ac-4's are much the better ski. You can define the price later

The AC4 as mentioned is the better ski. Been on 'em both and the AC4 is hands down better. I'm sure if you do an extensive web search, you should be able to find a pair w/ bindings for a decent price. Check for pre-season ski sales in your local area.

K2 VS Volkl?

Would you buy a Chinese car or a German car?

I have the K2 Recons. They are great skis and extremely popular where I ski. I have never tried the AC4's, so I can't compare them. I tested these and fell in love, so I stopped looking.
