Haven't even gotten to the mountain yet and I'm already scared.

Long story short...

A guy I know from another BBS, who used to live in my area, is probably coming in for the holidays and it's looking like he, I and a couple of his friends are going to head up to Jay Peak.

Now, no big deal if we get a good dump.

But, if we don't...
it looks like The Jet is going to be the only run that's fully open.

Now, I know it's customary for western skiers to make fun of eastern skiing, but a black diamond in Vermont is no joke and this is my second season EVER.

anyone here ever skied Jay Peak and can give me a heads up on what I can expect there in early season if there hasn't been a good dump yet?

Dr Go forgot

Just kidding about the Canadians!
It is snowing right now at Jay, rain in the valleys. The north facing slopes should be fine. Mainly blues, plus some easy blacks. The trees will be a no-go area, not enough coverage to hide the stumps.

Well it sounds like Hell in Jays Peak
Or an average day in Oz
Suck the gut in
Ride the fear
And just Ski

Where is your positive mental attitude?

We're heading up for the holidays too, that's 3 full week's away! MRG WILL have snow, Sugarbush too, Jay is blowing and snowing as I type......

Snow is all I'm asking for for x-mus. I've already cancelled my plans for this week-end, but I've got my sites on 12/7 for local skiing, I've got a week-end planned for the 15th & 16th. That's three days I plan to ski before I even get near Jay....

..... if I keep cancelling plans and I'm up at the lodge looking at grass and rocks I know for sure there are plenty of sharp pointy objects around to put us all out of our misery.

Hey Maggie... How ya doing?

Ironically, I was just reminded last night that the 22nd is the day of my niece's 1st b-day party.

I do have reservations at the lodge for the weekend of the 15th. You two going to be up there?

Hey Jerseyites... if you want to ski, do the smart thing:

Go to www.delta.com, and grab these $178 fares to SLC from Newark this weekend. The Saturday 7:10 am flight will have you on the slopes in LCC or BCC by noon (just called Solitude and they'll have all seven lifts open). See you on the flight!

Take a few slow easy warm-up runs and then take a lesson. A private would be the best thing for you at this point. That was one of the few "luxury" items that I allowed myself every year.

Sking over the top of people? Only if they are sitting in the middle of the trail smoking a butt... then they are treated like a human mogel!

In my DREAMS I'm on a flight out west. Moving permanently would be better, but my mommy wings keep me here in NJ so I'll just have to make the best of it.

Nakona - we're doing ASIA certification at Bellyeare 12/15 & 16. Will be in Vermont 12/26-31.

Pity that Bill had to reschedule your clinic.

What did you think of the snow at Belleayre last weekend? I spent the 2 days with Bill. Interesting spring conditions.

Had to cancel my Killington plans for this week. Will be at the Rally next weekend(snow?), but Killington when you are taking your test. Good luck!!

I was the guy introducing the clothing logo. Have you checked out the site yet?

KeeTov - I remember you!

That was snow last week-end? We were told it was SNUD! I didn't care one bit, I was skiing! It felt DAMN good. Makes this weather even harder to bear.

I'm just hoping for a break so I don't have to continue canceling ski plans.

I was interesting skiing. Most people discuss balance or edges, we were discussing how to repair skiis!

Hm, do we ski on that slush/dirt for three turns, or do we try an LONG hop turn....

Well then, I guess I most likely won't see you until January because, as far as I know, I'm visiting with friends in ohio on that last weekend.

Of course, if plans change...
I'll most likely come up.

In any case, I'm, going to have some time off in January, so I'll be doing some midweek skiing.

Re: turning in slush or on grass.... we actually received a LESSON on how to ski grass and snud. ~shaking my head. Never in my wildest dreams. Our instructor told us, don't make turns, it'll ruin your skis. Pick your spot, put your ski's together and just go for it!

Nakona - you doing instruction week-end?
That would be a really good week-end for you to get some good lessons for a great price!

Jay is the northernmost Vermont ski area on the spine of the Green Mountains. Storms coming in from the northeast and northwest hit Jay first so they get first flakes and typically have more natural snow than other vt ski areas. Sometimes Jay has boilerplate ice here and there, and the trick is to make sure your edges are sharp, sharp. Sharp edges make it easier to traverse tough ice. Jay is making more glades every season and the snow tends to accumulate and also stay soft in the trees. Jay is great. I go there every President's week and take 4 12-year-olds. They think they're in Europe what with the aerial tram and all the Canadian French.

Conditions don't matter as long as it's slippery

I saw Jay from a distance this Thanksgiving weekend, and all the trails were white, which is more than I can say for any other mountain in Vermont right now. That doesn't mean they are skiing on all those trails, but it's a safe bet that Jay will get more snow than any other New England area by Christmas. Of course, this year that isn't saying a whole lot. I knew there'd be a price to pay for last year!
Fear not grasshoppers, snow will come. While this year seems worse than most, December snow is always an iffy proposition. MRGs inaugural season for the single chair didn't get started until January due to lack of snow.

But the snows will come. 17 years of skiing Jay have taught me that no matter how bad December and early January are there is skiing by the end of December and good woods skiing can almost be guarenteed in mid to late January.
I predict that Maggie and CJ will have decent skiing over Christmas (snow making trails good, natural trails OK but no woods trails).

Don't panic its only December 1st.

Hey Chris! I never would have guessed!

You were quite the topic of conversation at my dinner table last night as we tried to figure out who pragmaticskier could be. More than a few e-mails went out asking...

Do you ski on Salomon 9000 9E2S
Do you ski about 25 days a year
Do you ski an average of 25 days

So, I have lots of ski trivia about my fellow ski friends. Some even said that yes, they WERE pragmaticskiers!

Now I have the answer - we'll have more fun at my table tonight!

This weather is killing me..... think I'm turning into a vampiress..... I see the frost in the morning and I'm happy, but when the sun comes out I cringe.

Doesn't look to good for MRG for the last week of December. Gonna have to start thinking of other options... Jay, Sugarbush, Killington....

Santa - all's I want for x-mus is snowmaking weather!!!!!!
