Went "Old School" last night...The Maltese Flamingo - Page 2

I have to mention that the film was made in 1996, so I'm not sure how easy it will be to find. It was a K2 production and Dick Berrymores original Performers is on the VHS tape along with Steve Winters newer version.

PHIL!!!

Thanks for posting this.

Based on this thread, I plunked down on a Greg Stump 4-pack DVD box set and yesterday since the weather was pretty sucky in SF, I plopped Blizzard of Ahhhs into the player and checked it out.

I have to say, that film kicks a$$!

I've watched a handful of the newer ski flix (some TGR stuff, of course the newer Warren Miller, and some Rage films) and the O.G. Plake/Schmidt stuff was amazing. Hell, the music even sounded good some 20 years later (and I hated all those bands when they came out in the '80s, too!).

The only bummer I suffered from watching it was the realization that I'm probably not that great of a skier afterall (then again Plake, Schmidt, and company were the cream of the crop, so perhaps such comparisions aren't terribly valid).

How about them 223's!?!?!?!?!?!

Makes me want to pull out my 198's all the more and just ski those until I'm worthy...

What's really amazing is to watch "Blizzard of Ahhs" back to back with something like MSP's "Hit List"

The skiers are hitting lines that Plake and Schmidt could only dream about on those 223s and look so much more graceful on all types of snow. Then watch something like WM's Journey and watch Plake ski now. Same effect, he looks so much smoother everywhere. It's really dramatic the difference skiing technology has made in the last 10 years.

You could see pretty much my whole wardrobe in this movie . The bump style is so different that what we do now and you get to see some Ballet. This movie has everything. A must view for all ski nuts.

Other Stump flicks:

The Good, the Rad and the Gnarly
The Blizzard of Ahhhh's

Because this thread deserved it,

it totally looked like they sped up the footage as he did those traverse slides. the dynamics are all wrong.

I loved those movies then and maybe more now.  Long live Plake . A great skier and ambassador of the sport. When ever I see something with him in it, I will sit wait and watch.

JC, thanks for the great vid. It shows just how much fun Plake has on skis, no matter where he happens to be at the time. I need to show this to the owner of the shop I work at, he is an old ballet guy that was on the Pro Freestyle Tour in the '70's (skied with Wong and the other big names of the day) and he keeps saying how ballet is going to make a come back.

Was thinking about Plake the other day and happened on it; thought it would be a good one to share. I'm glad you guys (and hopefully others) enjoyed it.

A lifetime on skis, and a real sense of joy - they both really come through! What's not to like? I'll take a seat anytime as well!  ;-)

BTW, anyone know if Plake will be doing his early season resort tour this year, and if so, where and when? It'd be a blast to see him ski in person.

Cool video!  I went "old school" this past weekend myself, with P-tex, Lies, and Duct Tape.  Its not quite as old as Maltese Flamingo but good none the less.

Watched Maltese Flamingo last night and Loved it!!

One thing that I noticed is how much spring snow, and marginal conditions they skied in those earlier movies and ripped it like it wasn't sh!t, on 215 straight skis!

In comparison, most of the contemporary ski porn is about deep powder, big drops in perfect conditions and fat skis.

I am humbled by the amazing skiing in the Maltese Flamingo!  I want to be Lynne Wieland!

Hi Midwest Pete,

It's Banana Pants. Got the heads up on this forum from my friend Bob who did some stunt skiing for Dan O'callahan in Hotdog.

Hard to believe it was 25+ yrs ago. and I was 19. Just a baby!

Yes, also Maltese and a few other stump movies. He's coming out with a new one "Legend OfAhhhh's" a true story. History of skiing....gonna be EPIC! (if I can use that word)

Life in Boise is good. Still skiing, mtn biking, and raising my kids.

Take care and thanks for the LOVE!

Lynne

She sent me a message a couple years ago -- I think I was so excited to hear from her I scared her away! redface.gif

And of course she was Banana Pants in Hot Dog!
