Anyone here listen to music when they ski? - Page 2

this has been covered a zillion times on this site.....

Well I do listen to music while skiing, hardly ever with friends. Unless they are the type of people that listen to music while with other people at which case they probably arent my friends.

As for headphones I prefer giro built in head phones because you can still hear around you.

Back home in PA I would normally do this during the week only weekend were way to crowded and collisions quite common. Being at snowbird now with longer lift rides and more open terrain than the east. I freeski with my Ipod all the time. I stay off the beaten path Do alot of exploring and even when i get back to the more crowded areas they arent as crowded as the east.

I listen to a bunch a different stuff, I my main reason for doing it is becasue it stops me from thinking. If I am not thinking I much more likely to just do stuff instead of thinking about it and screwing it up.

What is it about the sounds of nature that need to be masked by the MP3?

Can anyone answer this question?

I listen to music to drown out the laughter of locals.

Which sound of nature are you referring to? The high-pitched whine of lift motors? People screaming at the other members of their party across the hill? The lawn-mower sound of the snowmobiles?
The wind in the trees, the chirping of birds, the sound of a babling brook, the MTB coming up behind me, the cracking of a branch caused by the foot of a mountain lion : . That sort of thing.

Of course those are summer sounds.

I can see the need to drown out noises you don't like. I just wonder why people need to mask the sound of the wind in their ears as they fly down a hill.

I see people walking on trails in the Sierras with an MP3. Just seems odd to me to mask the sounds of nature.

Wind noise, while delightful, gets a little boring to us urban sophisticates. We find it refreshing to know that less jaded folks find enjoyment in such simple pleasures.

The backcountry boring? Whatever. :

Ah for simple pleasures.

First, the thread police need to chill on the "there have been other threads crap".
Second, I started listening to the Ipod last year and love it especially when I ski alone!

Nope! Messes with my natural chi. (And I don't mean Tai Chi)

Lars a few months ago I'd have never guess you to be a LZ man!
Today it doesn't surprise me at all.

I searched to find some other threads about music and skiing.
The most interesting was originally posted by BadRat back in Dec 2002.

on a semi-related LZ tip, what do you all think of Wolfmother, the hard rock outfit from Down Under?
Can't stand listening to music when I ski. It messes with my rhythm, concentration and feel.

Free download

Do you like this song? I remember it from "The Harder They Come" soundtrack. I'm not sure what DJ Spooky did to it. Is it a re-mix?

the new Beck album, The Information, is pretty sweet. I mean it's pretty standard Beck, but he's streamlined the funk and rap aspects into some seriously cool mid-to-down-tempo grooves. It's also much more of an album than Guero was (i.e. it flows much better from start-to-finish).

Beck's cool. But I already have too many albums. I need a new hard drive before I can resume importing my CDs. I do like your music posts. I'm pretty much only adding free (legal) mp3s to my library at this point. Did you like the reggae I linked to?
i need to scope that track. I was into Spooky back in the day (say 6-7 years ago). you ever hear the Massive Attack vs. Mad Professor album?
No, I'm not into music like you are. I have a lot of classic rock, jazz, country, bluegrass and classical CDs acquired over many years. I don't know what Spooky had to do with the track. It sounds like the original to me, but I haven't heard it in awhile. I've heard some Massive Attack and like it, but I never listened to Spooky.

which track were you referring to? (the link you gave went to the entire album)

given the album's description: "It was only natural then for Spooky to compile a list of songs from Trojan’s vaults that combine the old and the new and offer a 21st century soundsystem." it leads me to believe this is just a mix tape with Spooky's name (i.e. he either picked the tracks or actually picked and mixed them) stuck on it to sell vintage reggae to the kids into Spooky's scene.

Oops, sorry. The song I tried to link to was the last on the list, Desmond Dekker's "Shanty Town", (the FREE download). You can stream the whole thing, but I had only listened to "Shanty Town" when I posted that link. I'm listening to the rest of the album now.
