Need help-Atomic Race Tech RS boots?

I have a chance to grab a pair at a pretty cheap price in about a week and a half. Can't find any info on the Race Tech RS on either a search of this site or on Atomic's website or on Keelty's site. Are these really plug boots? What's the flex like? Low volume and narrow or what?

What is this Race Tech RS that you speak of?

RT comes in two forms, the plug TI (3 flexes) and consumer plug CS (2 flexes). There is(was) also an ultra softy CS known as the S.

I have the TI's in an extra soft and they are good boots, tight, with quick response. I read somewhere that the CS softs are similar in flex to the TI extra softs. That is probably true, despite the flex numbers on the Atomic website. The TI extra softs are stiff. The TI softs are very stiff.

The TI's have a very smooth flex and good snow feel. They have a very low instep. My boots probably need some work here. I have a C width foot and had to get the toe box ground a little bit. I have a size 25, and wear a 28 shoe.

A flick of the ankle applies pressure to the inside. The outside of the boot has plenty of room for articulation.

And now you know my problem....I can't find anything on this model, but I got inside info that at the local ski swap starting next Friday they will have 2 pairs of Atomic Race Tech RS boots for sale in 27.0. If these are decent plugs, I'll drop a C-note on them. Anybody ever heard of them?!?!?

Are you sure they are not the RT CS?

I think it's a typo. Just look at the outside cuff when you get there. It'll say either,

RT TI, RT CS, RT S, or RACE TECH (pre 05/06 plug)

I have the original Racetech, not the TI.

That sounds like a mistake, I doubt there is an RS. Just remember when you try them on that these boots don't stiffen much in the cold.

Thanks for all the feedback. I'll report back once I get my mitts on them.

Any experience on how Atomic plugs fit? GMOL sized my feet at a 27.5 left and 28.5 right. I'm not into losing toenails any more....do these shells fit true to size? I'm guessing I'll have to punch out the right one (these are 27.0's). I'm planning to share the custom footbeds I got for my XT's in these.

BTW, I have an average width foot with a low instep, no arches at all, and severe pronation (the footbeds address that issue).

As you probably know 27 & 27.5 are the same shell, the only difference is the 27 has a thciker insole but since you will be using a custom bed, they are identical.

the Race Tech has a low instep so that should be good for you. the opening of the lower shell, (throat is quite narrow)

I would wear a 26 in a retail Atomic boot, but would have to wear a 27 plug.

You'll just have to try them on to see.

Grinding would be my first choice, but if you have to stretch the shell or punch in places that is what you must do. I try to avoid punching or stretching & only have those mods done as a lst resort. I prefer having them ground out.

Thanks A-man. I did know about the 27's and 27.5's being the same shell. Do you know if the RT CS has a neoprene toebox in its liner? My only experience with plugs is the pair of 02-03 28.5 Icon XT17's. I really like them, but sized them for my larger foot rather than sizing for the smaller foot and working on the length for the other. Because I can get such a great deal on the Atomics, it's worth the money to give them a try to see if I like them better.

Yes.

The Atomic RT Ti runs slightly big. I tried it on and compared to the XT, it has a wider forefoot and possibly a narrower ankle/heel area. I ordered a pair. I will know more when the boots arrive. I did not have time to take out the liner and look inside the lower.
Check out post 142 from this thread. Jeff said the same thing.

If your XT's are very comfortable i suggest you downsize. If they are tight fitting i would get them in the same size. My XT's are very tight fitting (3 sizes smaller) and i ordered the RT Ti in the same size. It will be more comfortable than the XT. It has a wider forefoot b/c that is how it was designed to work.

Thanks Jamie, I figured you'd have solid input. In fact these RT's would be a full shell size down from my XT's.

Well, I was disappointed today...these were Race Tech S in XS (extra soft) flex. They fit OK, but I don't like soft flexing boots. Also, the price wasn't as good as what I was led to believe. I passed. Thanks for the insights Real9999, sywsyw, & Atomicman.
