AC4 05/06 versus AC4 06/07?

What difference would one notice skiing the AC4 of the 2005/2006 season back to back with the AC4 of 1006/2007?

Also, for an average skier of about 155 pounds, 5' 8" who already owns the 2005/2006 All Star in 161 (love them) and the Head Monster iM 77 Chip in 170 (also love them), what length of new AC4 would seem appropriate - the 163 or the 170?

I'll keep my own biases on AC4 length to myself for now.

Oboe, I cannot answer the difference question regarding the different year's skis, but I can offer my opinion on length. Given that you already own a short turn ski, I would stick to the longer ski (170cm). For the AC4 is designed for I think you will find it's qualities to shine better in the longer length. It is deisgned to be a high speed all condition machine - and from wht I have heard has a bias toward "GS" style turns. The last thing you will probably want is a ski that is supposed to feel solid and stable, feeling squirrely and unsubatantial underfoot because you skied it too short. That is just my take though... I do however find myself going longer and longer with skis recently in order to get that extra bit of stability.

Sounds like overlap to me with the im.77 chips. Why not go with a set of fatties if you're dead set on another set of sticks?

I hear the 06/07 AC4s are stiffer than the 05/06. Haven't ridden the new model year, but can say last year's boards were fun - although not dramatically different from the im.77 chips that are my regular hard snow ski.

I echo the thoughts of HS though regarding length as I found the 184 AC4 to be at least as responsive, if not moreso, than my im.77 chips in the 177 length.

Thanks for the input. To clarify: The Volkl AC4 would replace the Head Monster 77. My quiver would be the All Star and the AC4.

Oboe,

I have not yet ski'd the 2006/07 ac4. I ski'd last years and liked them a lot. My tech has ski'd them and he describes a "fat allstar". He says the new model is a huge upgrade with the ipt motion bindings. That is precisely why I want a pair. You know how a feel about the Allstars:

I agree with Greg re size.., I would lean towards the 170 for you. Were I to purchase a set I would buy the 177(or maybe 184) - As you know, my allstars are 168.

I am real short of cash: going into this season, I will not likely be able to purchase new boards for this year. Feel bad for me, I bought 2 pair last year

I think you are onto a dream quiver...161 Allstar and 2006/07 AC4. Let us know how you make out and what you find, decide. Perfect 2 ski quiver for Vermont....add some 177 Mantras and you'd have it really covered...

Have a great season:

Agreed!

Volkl seems to be THE brand this year. With the skis mentioned, and more, they've hit consecutive grand slams.

Apparently, K2 hasn't ruined Volkl, as some feared.

Hello all - I posted a review of the 06-07's in 170 and 177 last spring; to my surprise at 165 lbs liked the 177 a litle better. So definitely the 170 for your size. No dramatic differences from last year's, but touch smoother and damper, perhaps a beat slower edge to edge. 170 skied more like a very fat carver, 177 like a detuned GS. Was surprised that Keelty thought they were heavy and not for moguls; for 82 mm I found both lengths very willing in the carved-up trees and big moguls on the lower sides of China Bowl.

Beyond, please give me a link to your post of last spring reviewing the 06/07 AC4.

Oboe, Any particular reason why you ar replacing the monsters?

I had a pair myself last season and loved, however, they delaminated a couple of times. Head replaced them with 2007 model (no chip)

Let's get right to it, craigr - I'M A GEAR WHORE!!!!

I want to notch up to a wider ski, but not THAT much wider. Eventually, I could round out the unholy trinity with the Mantra.

In Utah last mid-April, I found that the 77s were better in those spring conditions than the Allstars - and I think that even wider would have been even better. Leaving the 77s is like leaving a sweetheart about whom you really have no complaints . . . but yuh just got an itch to try something new. Sometimes that works out . . . and sometimes it doesn't. I'll let you know. :

OK, for better or worse, for poorer or for poorer, in fitness and in health, until a newer ski doth us part - I'm going for the 06/07 Volkl AC4 in 170 cm. I'll keep you posted on developments - such as when wifey kicks them out of bed, when they sustain their first "guest induced" scratches - and, oh ya, almost forgot - how cool they look in the lift line. Maybe later I'll be able to post something about how they ski.

Basically, I'm buying them because they're new, cool and RED!

Strong! Thinking along the same lines myself.
