Trip Report Grand Canyon Rafting 8/10 - 8/20

My son, George and I went on a ten day oar powered rafting trip down the bottom half of the Grand Canyon from Phantom Ranch to Diamond Creek. People, this was the best vacation EVER! We traveled with OARS and it was a smart choice. The guides were great folks, the meals were first rate too.

Thought I'd share a few pictures from the trip:

Starting the trip at Phantom Ranch meant we had to hike into the canyon from the South Rim. We hiked the Kaibab Trail instead of the Bright Angel because the views are beter.

Grand Canyon Rafting Cont.

After waiting around at the boat beach for a couple of hours, the rafts showed up. People who were only doing the top half of the Canyon Departed and those of us doing the bottom half got on board.

The next several days were a pleasant mix of camping, hikes and some of the biggest white water on the planet.

Glad you enjoyed the pics, LCS. Frankly, they don't come close to doing the place justice. I have traveled lots in my life and this trip was by far the best. Don't get me wrong, I love to ski, but this was the best trip ever. I'm already looking into doing the 17 or 18 day full canyon trip next year.

Nice TR, I will show it to my kids. We just booked next June, really looking forward to it.

How much, or what is link to website of company you used? looks fantastic, but I will wager out of my $$ range. Have to keep going to the New and Gauley rivers in WV. Gauley is very good river, only runs in fall on weekends. Kick ass technical, class 3-5 rapids.

Thanks for sharing your trip and pics. The pic of the kid jumping, is that Elves Chasem(sic)? Man, that water is muddy.

When I lived out west, white water rafting was one of my fav things. My last trip was on the Green River from Gates of Lador(sw Wyo) to Split Mt(ne Utah). A fun 5 day excursion. You really feel detached from the world and the rapids are a thrill ride for sure.

Awesome pics. You've given me the itch to try it next year. Might look into something near Moab. They're just so darn expensive though!

Yup, that's Elves Chasm. The river was carrying a lot of silt since the monsoon activity was high. We were only sprinkled on a few times on the trip. George and I never set up a tent. Big rains on the rims washed tons of dirt into the river, though. We saw lots of evidence of recent big flash floods in side canyons. Diamond Creek where we took out had flooded 15,000 cfm four days before we got there...

Shred should have green water on his June trip next year. The nice thing about the monsoon activity is it kept the temperatures moderate - in the mid to high 90's as opposed to 105 plus.
