If you live on the north side, you'll probably take 20, which is a scary 2 lane road in Jo Daviess county.  I've been forced to divert on farm roads due to accidents on the main road, not much fun at night!  An alternate route that I like is to take North Ave out (you can cheat on I88 to I39 and then it's pretty much smooth sailing all the way to Savanna, it's 2 lane roads, but not as hilly and twisty as 20.

My favorite run is Apache, the one to the right of Warpath from the top.  It's a twisty double fall line, that's fun.  The one Coyote27 mentioned is Crazy Horse.  Warpath is fun if the conditions are good, Eagle is fun, just the transition at the bottom is exciting when you cross Moser (the intermediate run).

I like the view at Chestnut, it's pretty.

yikes, added to a 5 yr old thread!  very cool as it should get renewed with some new names, contacts,etc.

while my wife and I have started a few more trips out to Co, this yr was the least I've skied since she forced me to learn 12 yrs back. 

so, I'm in Iowa, my trip up to Chestnut is only 1 1/2 hrs at most but 2 yrs back I hit Granite in Wausau for the first time and found it great. 

So, if anyone wishes to add to this tread, giving some contacts for next season, I'll use it when I get a hankering to head northeast and search for some new buds to ski with.

It'd give my bro in law out in Wheaton another reason to meet up with me, if we get a bigger crowd to a resort.

Snowcrest is a great ski shop...owner Tom has more ski experience than any other shop owner in the Chicagoland Area...

Woo Hoo, winter is coming back!  Looking forward to fun times in the months ahead!

sad to say but I'll never again dismiss the comment that it's a dry cold in the mountains verses a wet in midwest!

I plan Chestnut to Wausau for any weekend with some notice ... really, Chestnut only 1 1/2 out could be almost any night for me ...

I hit Chestnut on 12/27/2012 and conditions were really good after Draco dumped snow and brought some cold for snowmaking to catch up!  The new web-cams really help to see the coverage and also the crowds.  In spite of that, it was relatively uncrowded given a holiday weekday!  Apache, my favorite, was in great shape, lower Warpath was nice, but the top was rather hard.

I went by myself and was able to bring out some old Volkls, still fun after 20 years!  I also got to play on my new Elan's and my new Full Tilts and was very pleased with the conditions.

The day's highlights included getting a great parking spot!  Meeting a couple from the same little town in Iowa where I was introduced to skiing and where I lived when I first started skiing at Chestnut (so long ago that lift tickets were $6 on weekends!) and spent a couple of runs with a very nice guy also skiing by himself and happy to share the chair and make some turns with another skier!  

very good to hear, not surprised that it was slow on a Thursday.   drop an email to me next time and I'll try and make it up given just a short notice - if you wish, only  1 1/2 hr from me. 

Hit Sundown on Sunday thinking a weekend would be packed, wasn't that bad depending on what run one hit.  Personally I still like Chestnut a bit more for layout but both are pretty good for the Midwest.

Always had fun meeting folks from all about at Chestnut, many of the crew there are from outside of Galena as I've met a good handful from as far as Rockford and Iowa City.

Anyone goes to Wilmot?  I know it's one of the least recommended place around here, but it's also the closest.

I'd go to Alpine Valley over Wilmot. 

I'd also drive to Cascade over both of those two places.

Yeah, I've heard better things that goes like this:  Cascade > Alpine > Wilmot.  Yet, Wilmot much closer and convenient for me.  With that said, I still haven't gone there yet.  Maybe later this week or early next.

Any feedback on whether the Wilmot bunny slope is similar to the one at Alpine?

The other option is going the Michigan route. From Chicago, its between 5 to 5 1/2 hour drive up to Boyne Mt.

Hi All,

New to EpicSki.  Been a snowboarder for  the past 8 years and just started skiing this year.  I am from the Rockford area.  Here is a nice little spreadsheet a few friends and I put together this year just to help some people out if you are not from the Illinois/Lower Wisconsin area.  We've been out at the cascades the last 4 weekends and has been great so far this year.  While i just converted this year, I plan on sticking to skiing now as I just picked up a pair of skis.  If any of you are ever at any of these locations let me know, I would love to improve my new found passion.

P.S- The time to location is from Rockford.
