I think that IS the plan. The "old" tram will still run ski patrol this winter. It will also be used for construction for some period next summer while they do preliminary work on the new tram. BTW, the new tram will follow the existing tram route exactly. Fewer Forest Service approvals are required that way.
At some point next summer, however, the old one supposedly comes down. The ski patrol is working on a new snow control plan for the winter of 07/08 when there will be no tram. Nobody is quite sure how they're going to do snow control when the patrollers are unable to get to the top of the mountain during that season.
It may involve more cannons and bombs.
I'm off a little later today to a charity auction for our local science school (grades K-12). The big auction item this year is being donated by the ski corporation. They are auctioning off a "LAST Last Tram Party".
Sunday, October 1, is the final run for the public on the venerable old tram. The auction prize enititles the buyer to invite 45 of their best friends to ride the final car. Champagne and appetizers and a dinner at the top of the tram are all included. I have some friends who are planning to bid on it so A) I hope they get it, and B) I hope we're good enough friends of theirs that we'll make the short list.
