2. Mark and Cheryl prob 2/3 days Fri and Sun most likely, depends on how we feel.

3. abertsch -- vote for Kirkwood on Friday. Attending a wedding on either Sat/Sun, so would miss at least one of those days.

4. num- not sure yet, but thinking to make it Saturday and Sunday.

5. 2-TURN - I'll be at Heavenly Tues. to Tues. with no set plans yet, so I'll probably be meeting you guys somewhere. For preferences, Kirkwood and Alpine Meadows, but I will be skiing Heavenly sometime in that week just for convenience(liftside).
6. WTFH - I'll be there until the 28th! No idea where I'm staying, etc.

7. ScotsSkier - probabably 2 days, fri/sat. Vote for Kirkwood on friday as it would be good to get a tour with bears who know their way around.

Lets do Kirkwood on Friday. The ESA participants should be able to carpool to get there. Its not central to the ESA, but it can be a nice change of pace with a ton of great intermediate terrain as well as expert shots that should thrill (or back-off) most anyone.

I will carry a set of Motorola T6530 GMRS FRS radios tuned to 11-7.

Next decision Saturday: Alpine, Squaw, Sugar Bowl at the north end of the lake. Lets hear it.

These are all big ski areas and if you don't have a way to meet or communicate you will get lost.

Truckee room availability

As of now there are rooms in Truckee avail for the gathering days. We travel with dogs and this place is pet friendly.

See you on the hill:

Cirquerider, Considering that there is a good chance that 89 will be closed up the west side of the lake during the gathering, and considering that anyone staying on the north side will have to drive down the east side, can a firm decision be made on locations for all 3 days soon. We have a place on the south side but have made reservations in Truckee for Sat and Sun to accomodate sking with the bears at Squaw and Alpine. If Kirkwood is the choice for Fri we can stay on hwy 50 but if it moves to the north for fri then other arrangements will have to be made. I hope that I am not the only one who needs to know a definate plan. As a side note we haven'ty heard from MTT for a while and I was just wondering if things have changed since his first post in this thread? Thanks for all your work on logistics for this gathering. Hopefully the turn out will be forthcoming as conditions have improved on the hills.

I'm all for firming this up Mark. No one elected me King, so I'm looking for input. I also plan on the north shore for 16 and 17th because that is how it was originally planned.

How about we just say
Friday Kirkwood,
Saturday at Alpine Meadows and
Sunday at Squaw.

Objections? thoughts? Alternatives? We aren't that big a group, but we can definitely pull this together.

Here is a PM list by username: please add anyone you want. It is a good way to exchange cell numbers and other contact information: Please add names so we know who to expect

Cirquerider: mkevenson; ScotsSkier; Wear The Fox Hat; abertsch; ryan; num; 2-turn

Mark, where are your Saturday / Sunday accomodations?

I will be staying at the Travelodge in Tahoe City on Saturday night. I'm debating whether to add a Friday night in South Lake or at the Travel Lodge to have a shorter drive to Alpine in the morning, but can probably drive up Saturday morning. BTW, I booked through AAA and got $117/night, which seems OK for Saturday. Most places require a Friday night arrival.

Someone asked about MTT: Mike is heliskiing and shall not be spoken of again.

I am up for both Saturday and Sunday! If there are any intermediates in this group, I can join in.
Not a problem. Intermediates are welcome and will have lots of good places to ski.
So, this means you're buying the beer right?

Cirquerider, Fri stay at our trailer in Pollock Pines, Sat and Sun at the Inn at Truckee. They have rooms at reasonable prices for this time period.

Nomad555, I also feel like an intermediate skier.

Mark
Nomad, I'll raise you. I'm an intermediate on my first season, and I haven't skied west before.

Looks like I'm buying the beer
OK, why don't you BOTH buy me beer, then there's no argument!
How about a round for ALL THE BEARS in attendance!
mkevenson, don't feel like an intermediate anymore then?

Here's to the hope that a never ever will appear somehow and end up being the one buying.

I'm not a never ever, but I may be as close as we're going to get. However, this will be after ESA. I'm sure I'll be shredding like nobody's business by then!

You'll drink Sierra and like it.

Like num said - I don't feel like an intermediate anymore
post #140 of 167
Not to hijack this thread (ok fine, I'm hijacking slightly), but why do we call skiers "intermediate" as soon as they figure out how to turn (parallel). As a level 6 skier I barely (and I mean BARELY) feel like an intermediate even now. What's up with that?

-Adam
I'm with you on that. It took effort to get myself into the habit of not calling myself a beginner. When I'd say beginner, I'd get asked if I can turn in a wedge on greens yet. Really not what I meant by beginner.

And I'd have to be extra sure not to use the word beginner when talking with ski shop guys- the combination of being a chick and suggesting noobiness has bad results.

What happens at the gatherings is we try to meet in the morning, and will usually start on terrain that works for everyone. and we set up meeting times and places for lunch. As the day goes on groups of equal ability tend to form. So there is some coming and going of familiar faces. If we have spring conditions, this will be really relaxed and we probably tend to ski together more. If its a powder day, the expert / advanced skiers will be jonsing to get tracks and you may see the "no friends on a powder day" in effect; at least in the morning.

Folks are sending me cell numbers. I'll PM the list around and won't have any problems meeting up. For those attending ESA, you will be a different skier at the conclusion of that program, but you may also be ready to take Friday easy. Hey, Its California. Take it easy, we'll wait.
OK, I have a glitch, we have a friend skiing with us on Friday and Saturday. One of those days, wife wants to do the Tahoe Queen, which means Squaw. Should I have her book it on Saturday and meet you guys at Kirkwood on Friday, or book it on Friday and meet you guys on Saturday.
I think I'd rather meet everyone on Friday, so if we find some compatable skiers, we'd have all 3 days to ski together.
Also, unless I find something to like about Squaw (which I've never found before), I doubt if I'd want to do it 2 days in a row.
Another alternative, if nothing is set yet, Cirque's sched. works perfectly if we can switch Saturday and Sunday. and anyone staying on the south shore and book the TQ on Saturday, it is a good time.

I have no problem with the swap of Alpine and Squaw days. Come to think of it, I think that was the original plan.

Anyone. has an issue with it let me know. I'm going to edit the announcements and make this happen.

YOU GOT THE POWER, you are de man!!!

No prob here either. Squaw/Alpine they are so close I sometimes end up at the wrong one anyway?:
please add me to the PM list as I'm down for at least 1 or 2 of the days.

as for ability, i've given up trying to classify myself. i'll follow just about anyone over anything (other than drops and serious chutes of the Corbet's nature).

for example, i spent most of yesterday riding with a retired school teacher I met on the lift at Sugarbowl. With two titanium knees and a pair of first gen Explosives he put me to shame, but i kept up with him all the same).

i don't hard charge, but I'll ski until my legs fall off or the beer is served, whichever comes first.

has anyone heard from Sinecure or Alpinedad? They ride Alpine all the time.

Also, I may have my college roommate in tow, at least for the Alpine day. He's a ripping Tele head & hard boot/slalom boarder. we tend to ride the bowls and backside of the Meadows when the snow is ripe.
i just replied in the "Tahoe Gathering RollCall" thread... but i will definitely be at Alpine Meadows both days. i am scheduled to coach my ski team of 9-11 year olds and will be done at 2:30 if anyone wants some late afternoon turns.

Any suggestions where I should stay/ski until 28th?

Well, the Epic gatherning is at Kirkwood Friday, so you should definitely hit that. Sat/Sun they are hitting Alpine/Squaw. If you want to try new places, I'd stay in South Lake Tahoe and try Heavenly once for the views (ideally on a WEEKDAY). You'll probably want to go back to Kirkwood because it just has so much to offer.

as somebody who has had a season pass at Heavenly for the past 3 season, i will attest that the views are pretty amazing. but i've also been viewing them for years, so they kind of blur into one another.

but if you have never been, you should go at least one day. lift tix for Heavenly suck, though ($70).

I actually have some $42 ones, if you'd like me to save you one (or more) to cut the pain of $70.

also there's Mt. Rose.

Hell, you could actually ski all of Tahoe: Sugarbowl, Squaw, Alpine, Northstar, Homewood, Incline, Mt. Rose, Heavenly, Kirkwood, and Sierra (and even Donner Summit and Soda Springs for nostalgia and Boreal if you want to work it up with boarders).
