I think we all should particpate.....

Physicsman, I need to know how high to jump given an average weight per capita of 145 pounds. Figure 6x10 to the 8th people participate.

Ok , we got a larger percentage of folks in China and the rest of us are spread around. Has he taken into account the spread and mass of population centers?
Using his concept could we actually make it worse?
Or is he writing off many billions of people.?

Wouldn't this be like gnats jumping on a beach ball sized sphere with a bowling ball in its center suspended in a viscous fluid ?
As in little or no effect.

Nice analogy GZ, have you ever thought of becoming a ski instructor??

GaryZ: This is important stuff and it works too! I got my whole family to jump backwards in our house a few times for a test.

When I was late for work the next day, I discovered that all of our clocks had lost two minutes.

That's ok, my boss didn't buy it either.

: Since such a calculation would obviously have a profound impact on the future of mankind, I just don't think I'm up to the task. However, my colleague, Al E., might want to take it on, tho. He's pretty good at this physics stuff. I'll dig out the old Ouija board and try to contact him.

You think?

make sure to calculate using daylight savings time where needed.

And don't use 145 lbs. for the American contingent. We weigh more than that.

That is some big air we could do.

I think that this would only ADD to global warming.

The idea that jumping will change the earth's position in it's orbit is like thinking that blowing on the sail of a sailboat while standing on the deck will give you forward motion. In addition to doing nothing for the Earth's position or rotation, the friction created by that many bodies jumping all at once will be turned into heat, thereby increasing warming. Very dangerous. Does this guy have a death wish?

I suppose it matters whether you are using an absolute or relative point of reference.

Okay. Then let's all lie down.

David Lee Roth unavailible for comment?

BAD IDEA. That would lower the moment of inertia of the planet and speed up its rotation about its own axis. I like my days 24 hours long, not 23.999994 hours long thank you very much.

Then everyone stand on one foot and fart?

Nope. Methane is worse than CO2 as a greenhouse gas. Stand on one foot and HOLD IT.
