The primetime edition is also abridged. The morning edition, which usually starts around 8:30am Eastern time, is 3 hours and is live, with all the commentary done by Paul and Phil. It is very good.
The primetime show is 2 hours and is almost all Al and Bob. I agree with jstraw, I like Bobke, but Al is just a clueless sports show host looking for a full time gig with NBC. Bob and Al show up on occasion during the live coverage, mostly at the beginning.
The live OLN coverage of the TdF, alone, is worth the price of the TiVo. Admittedly, I also watch some of the eveing coverage (I watched yesterdays stage about 2 and a half times
) just to see if anything got added in that they didn't cover during the live coverage. but I do fast forward through a lot of the boring stuff, even when I watch the morning version.
On these flat stages, I tend to follow it live on Velownews.com, but I'll also watch it at home. For the mountain stages, I'll probably avoid the live internet coverage and wait until I can watch it on my TiVo, because I want the drama of seeing it all go down.
