France - January 2007

Thread Starter
Hi - I'm looking for any recommendations on a nice place to go in the French Alps in January 2007. The group has one week (Jan 3-10) and we're looking for something for strong intermediates (mainly on piste) which is preferably part of one of the Alpine circuits in which a single lift pass will get you access to lots of mountains in the area, such as Courchevel & the Trois Vallées* area. Après-ski isn't at the top of our list. Availability of runs, shorter lift lines (as much as possible given the time of year) and proximity to Geneva are more important. Chamonix & Argentière is one possibility I've read about. Any other ideas? Thanks a lot.

* This is lower on the list because it's 3 hours from Geneva, which is pushing it for us in terms of transfer time given our arrival and departure times.

If you're basing yourself in Geneva, then Chamonix is your best option, although Avoriaz/Portes Du Soleil are just on your doorstep.
If you stay in Chamonix, then you have Le Tour, Argentiere and Les Houches all within about 15 minutes on the free bus. Unfortunately Chamonix has great nightlife
If you go before the 1st week of February, it won't be too busy (still busier than the US, but nothing on the February crowds)

If looking for short lift lines Cham likely won't fit that bill although the area is great.

Additional suggestions besides the ones already mentioned:

Val d'Isere/Tignes
Les Arcs (Paradiski)
Verbier (more recommendable than the French resorts IMHO)

Another very recommendable option but a longer drive from Geneva:

Serre-Chevalier/La Grave/Alp d'Huez/Les Deux Alpes (share mutual and optional one-day tickets)

Best is to follow the snow and make arrangements accordingly.
Good luck.

my vote after Les Trois Vallées would go to Avoriaz/Portes Du Soleil.

in terms of ease of access from Geneva I doubt you will do better than the Portes du Soleil

That area should tick all your boxes.

Possible downside is it is a bit low in altitude as compared to some others.
