The Yankee radio/tv team during that period -- Phil Rizzuto, Frank Messer, and Bill White -- is my yardstick for sports broadcasting. Incredible baseball knowledge, a perfect mix of distinct personalities, and whenever the game started to drag, Scooter would start talking about the cannoli he had that morning, the cavatelli he had for lunch, the braziale he had for dinner, or the case of agita he got from any of the above.

Mine is similar to GarryZ
Kevin Colabro-Basketball
Keith Jackson-college football
Dave Niehouse-baseball

Brent Mushburger for nothing, not even crappy ads. I can't stand the guy.

Curt Gowdy was awesome. And nothing beat watching the Celtics on TV with the sound down and Johnny Most on the radio.

I don't recall a time when Tim McCarver didn't act like the most obvious observation didn't strike him as a moment of brilliant insight that had to be articulated slowly so that stupid teevee viewers could understand the nuanced genius he was bestowing. Feh.

I pened this thread only to see if he had already been mentioned.

For football, I like Boomer Esiason.

Phil Rizzuto was an announcer? I only remember him as a player. Shortstop for the Yankees? Or was it the Dodgers?

For a talk show host, I like Laura Ingraham.

I think much of sports tv would benefit from not having announcers, honestly.

That explains it. I lost intrest in baseball (20 minutes of boredom squeezed into two hours) when I discovered auto racing about 1959.

My Father in law, who is of a certain age, likes to nap.

He can take a nap in the third inning, wake up in the seventh, and still follow the game.
