Golf - what's in your bag and why? - Page 6

big bag change is in place

I love the new irons....the no offset players cavity back is the thing for me it appears.

Played 2 days in a row for the first time all year...amazing what that does for your game too!

Hit my favorite local par 3....used no tees(yes I know I replaced all the divots very carefully )Hit 6 greens including the pin on the hardest hole on the course, actually thought it was gonna go in....golfers worst nightmare...an ace with no witnesses.....6 pars(3 birdie putts lipped out) 3 bogies...a solid 30 my best of the season so far.

More importantly solid contact on every full swing and a sand explosion out of the one trap I was in to 6 inches...tap in par.

Whatta day! I am inspired now - gonna be hot in pursuit of dead solid perfect!

I'll be playing now till the snow flies!!

Callaway x14's and x16's are going on ebay!!!

Also highly recommend Bobby Clampett's new book.....did you know the average tour player's swing bottoms out 4 inches past the ball? The average scratch player bottoms out 1 inch past the ball? My goal is the later by the end of the year.....I think these sticks will get me there.....plus I only pulled 2 shots today in the 9 holes.

So.....again...I ask -

What's in your bag and why?

My bag now(today)
-Cleveland TA 3 irons 4-9 w/dg r300 shafts
-Wilson staff jp tour grind pitching(50) and sand(55) wedges(vintage butter)
-Mizuno MP 60 lob wedge
-Ping anser 2 (32 in) putter
-Ball Callaway HX tour(www.lostgolfballs.com rocks)
-the Taylor made R510 tp 10.5 wi graffaloy blue shaft and the King Cobra 5 wood with cobra graphite shaft were left in the trunk.....

I am also experimenting with recently obtained Callaway steelhead 3 fairway wood, uniflex shaft....but I am going to spend the rest of the season at the par 3 focusing on iron play.....

If I get enough on the ebay sale of the Callaway sets I may buy a brand new set of Mizuno MP 60's.....the pro I hang with says they play identical to the TA 3's just a little more forgiving......

Hybrid experiment over for now....I am in love with iron play again!!!! I wanna spank the backside of that little pill!!

I haven't had a brand new set of irons since I bought the Ping eye 2's in 89

I think I gotta start working on ms hrstrat57....time to join that country club she has always talked about!!!

Anyone not love their 60 degree wedge? I saw a program the other day that claimed this innovation (vs laying down a 56 degree to change the loft) shaved more points off pro scores for the past 15 years than anything.

Wondering if it's worth carrying a 56 AND a 60 ....

Until I switched to the TA 3's I was carrying Mizuno 56 and 60 deg MP forged wedges....amazing wedges, they threw out my beloved Ping eye 2 sand (58) and lob(61) wedges.

No pw with the Clevelands so I pulled out my old nearly mint jp grind wilson staff wedges, had em regripped with new tour velvet. The Wilson sand wedge is better out of the sand than the Mizzy 56 thus the 56 got thrown out for now....the jp is a 55 degree sw, the pw is a 50.

So I've gone from 58/61 to 56/60 to 55/60 for now.....the wilson wedges and the mizzys feel very much the same. Short game is my forte, I probably am pretty much a scratch player from 80 yards in...always has been solid cause I have a big yard and I can hit full sand or lob wedge shots over and over.....practice makes perfect. I have often thought of putting up a net(my neighbor has done this in the past, he is a scratch player) so I could achieve the same practice frequency will a full bag. I had years in the past where I played 70/ 80 rounds....I'd like to get back to that level.

A private CC membership would be better tho....:

riskier, nice bag - why am I not surprised? Have you picked out this seasons new skis yet? Ever up for a quick spin around RH drop me a note....when nobody is there we can get around in an hour...which is about all I can sneak away for with the current schedule/ tho the speed of it hopefully will enable me to sneak off a lot till the season ends. $12 isn't hard to take either.....

See you on the hill soon...5 weeks away!!!

yeah I just gotta do it - get a 60.

I have a Wachusett pass this year - quickk9 may be posting the details if people want to join in our GPS group - so if you're up to Wachusett maybe we can hook up some time.

Wa is on the docket huge...I expect the no 1 all time epic trip forum thread to get bumped soon....

More the merrier....you guys post in the thread and you're in the club.

Pick up a used forged 60 wedge somewhere just to give it a whirl...I highly recommend the mizzy's but others are just as good I am sure....

c ya this winter.

Hi hrstrat! Haven't seen you driving by of late, though I haven't been out with the dogs as frequently either. Other than looking around and reading some reviews, I haven't done anything in terms of new skis. There's a bunch I'd like to try. Think I need to figure out a way to justify a quiver; maybe some RX8s for groomers and something a bit wider underfoot. I've still not hit Rose Hill but would definately be game for a quick round. How are you liking your car now that you've lived with it a while? I'm starting to look at new rides.

CT55, we'll definately be making some turns at Wachusett so lets see if we can get a little bigger group of Bears together.

Cheers!

I wouldn't trade my 56/60(okay in my case there actually 55 and 59 degrees - both SMT Durometer's) for anything. Even though the lofts are close, the bounce on mine are dramatically different which makes them play much different. My 55 degree wedge has 4 degrees of bounce and is great in my hands with my swing plane off of tight lies. My 59 degree wedge has 12 degrees of bounce and is what I use for most greenside sand shots, flop shots, and out of "fluffy" lies around the greens. I'll rarely hit the 59 degree wedge off of a tight lie/hardpan as with that much bounce and my relatively shallow attack swing plane the chances of me hitting it long and thin are higher than I like.
caveat emptor - as a trained engineer I am required by law to love Dave Pelz

I love having the option of my 56 degree sand wedge with a lot of bounce and my 60 degree lob wedge with less bounce. I don't know about taking 2+ strokes off every round, but it certainly makes a difference when hitting off of firm lies where less bounce is more forgiving.

When I got my last set of clubs 2 years ago, I dropped an iron and added a fourth wedge (52 degrees). As much as I believe in Dave P's advice to have 3 different distances for each wedge (for a 9, 10:30 and full backswing), I love having full swing clubs for 125/115/105/95 yards instead of trying to adjust my swing at these distances. For me, this change was enabled by the introduction of a hybrid club that gave me sufficient control and distance to drop my 3 iron and my 5 wood and necessitated by swing improvements that added 10 yards to my distances.

ok, i've swapped out a lot of my clubs this summer and this is what i've got currently:

titleist 905 8.5 with speeder
taylor v steel 13 degree
mizuno mp-60 3-pw plus mizuno 51, 56, 60 degree
cameron newport 1.5 or 2.5 (i forget which, they look identical to me)

my son has gotten more serious about the game and got a new set this summer, so of course i had to go out and revamp my bag as well. the funny thing is, i'm still not sure i'm happy with any of the changes i've made. i'm pretty inconsistent with the 905 driver and the mp-60's as well. a bit surprising as these are pretty well thought of clubs. it's probably my game that hasn't been very sharp, the clubs must be fine!!! i like the mizuno wedges a lot.

December 12th it's all about the golf!!

probably my last golf related post of the season....

was all packed up to go to wa wa this morning on my wednesday off....then

my new golf clubs were waiting for me when I got home from work last night:

Yep, that's right bag emptied again!!

Been experimenting a bit with some Ping G2 green dot mid irons I picked up on ebay. 4,5 and 6 irons. Frankly the upright by 2 degrees was resulting better ball contact then I had ever experienced. Was browsing www.callawaypreowned.com and spotted a used set of green dot G2's.

What the heck said I....I got a bit of dough right now and I pulled the trigger!! Best part is they took my Callaway x 16's in trade for $200(which is more than they are getting on ebay right now) so the deal cost me nearly nada.

50 degrees today out on the local par 3 track, I just focused on contact, been rolling the putter well and I realized on the 9th tee....wow I am standing here at 2 over !!! I was the only one one the course.....felt like I had my own private club. Quality time with my new sticks all by my lonesome. Honestly felt a lot like those days at wa a couple of years ago, all by myself dialing in the new allstars. Sometimes I guess it is good to spend time hanging out with yourself It was so much fun I went around again...18 holes in less than 2 hours. Sweet

I like these G2's!! First time I ever owned cushion shafts.....nice feel.

The set did come with HL long irons. Yuk, hook machines for me. Experimented for about 5 swings on the 8th tee and had the cows left and about 175 out running for their lives with a few dead left 4 irons. Those will be going on ebay. Luckily I had already scored mint 4 and 5 irons on ebay to complete the traditional set.

- - - - - - - - - -

So what was in my bag today and why?

Ping G2 4-pw Ping regular flex cushion shafts green dot
Ping eye 2 sw, lw
Ping anser 2 32 inches

Callaway hx tour balls

Why?

guess I am a gear ho?

We were golfing December 23rd near me last year.

Heading down to Naragansett RI this weekend for a family party and I'm always amazed the extended season they get down there - dunno if it's the ocean influence or just further south or what.

time to talk golf

on vacation this week....

put wax on the last 2 pairs of skis yesterday in the closet they are.....best spring skiing in 50 yrs, can't get anybody interested.

My head i prestige mid plus sticks x 3 are with my stringer now getting a fresh set for the tennis season....league dubs starts in two weeks!!

So, it's spring fully sprung....let's talk golf gear.

Got Ping fitted!! Again, was fitted in 89 for the Ping eye 2's...std length, black dot. Almost 20 years, time flys

Now with age and swing changes I am blue dot (1 up) and 1/2 inch long. Reg flex vs zz lite stiff flex...

So what did I do about it?

Checked with local pro shop....had just taken Ping eye 2 plus blue dot reg flex kt shaft in trade!! $115 and they are yours he said.

Wow, sweet. Eye 2 plus stronger lofted than eye 2, which means an eye 2 plus 6 iron goes about the same as an eye 2 5 iron for me....which is very good, bringing it in higher and softer is good.

Just about to put everything else in the basement on e bay.

- - - - -

In the bag in the corner right now?

Ping eye 2 plus blue dot 4-P
Ping eye 2 black dot S and L
Taylormade 510TP 10.5 with graffaloy blue reg flex
Callaway Steelhead III 4 wood Cally reg flex graphite shaft
Lampkin Jumbo grips on all
Cameron Pro Platinum Newport 2 33 inches Winn tour wrap but soon with have a red dancing Cameron studio grip.

12 clubs keep the load light so I can walk and carry!!

In reserve depending on track?
Taylormade 22/25 degr hybrids
Callaway Steelhead 3,5,7 woods all cally uniflex steel

Have a great golf, tennis, biking season bears!!
(out on the bike path 3 times this week on the new steel frame Bianchi....celeste of course)

I love vacations!!!

Let's play!

and let's talk some golf!!!

bumperoo?

Surprised this thread has died with all the gear heads on this forum....bragging about your golf gear is almost as sweet as a well struck four iron

(I know this four iron deal cause last time out I hit my four iron to 5 feet on the toughest hole on my local par 3 track (178 over a brook and fully bunkered left and right with jail long.....)

Birdie, sweet!! First birdie on that hole, the only hole on the course I hadn't played in 1 under.....

- - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -

Well, see if I can jump start this puppy....

Bag remains as above except my old school Taylor made tour prefrd midsize 3(graphite) and 5 (steel) fairway woods are firmly back in the bag....on vacation last week went to the range with the full inventory and was hitting the 3 wood half way up the net....back in and freshly regripped are my old friends.....expect they will have a long stay. If you can't hit these old dogs straight you need to give up the game.....

Ping eye 3 blade SW has bumped out the eye 2 sand wedge....it is automatic out of the beach, more so than the orig eye 2 SW it bumped. Eye 2 sand wedge wasn't getting hit much....the eye 2 lob wedge (61.5degree) is my go to weapon inside 60 yards.

Also back to my old Ping L 8 stand bag....light and pretty green/beige:

Pretty much playing Cally HX tour ball most of the time.....esp now that they can be had cheap......

So Ping eye 2 plus 1/2 long blue dot 4-p, eye 3 SW and eye2 orig LW make up the irons.....TM fairway woods discussed above are firmly in and putter remains 33" Cameron Newport Pro Platinum

What's in your bag and why?

I added a 60 degree two years ago to go along with my 56 and 52. Best new addition to my bag in a long time. In most rounds I use it more than any other club except the driver and putter and sometimes more than the driver on tight courses when I'll tee of with a 2 hybrid or 3 wood.

I use it for many shots between 20-70 yards and for a lot of green side lofted pitch shots depending where the flag is.
For chipping I want the ball running on the green so I use a less lofted club like a 9 iron, 7 iron or even sometimes my 2 iron hybrid on a really long chip.

Just in the middle of swapping in two new woods and new irons this summer.
New driver is easier to hit straight, better trajectory, not necessarily longer. New 3 wood is great; finding more ways to use it off tee and turf.
Mizuno MP-60s - got a great deal on them, figured I'd try 'em and if I don't like 'em, then they're worth far more than I paid for 'em.

Here's what's in the bag:

Woods:
Titleist 907 D2, 10.5 degrees, UST Proforce V2, 75 gram reg. shaft (replaced Taylor Made 300ti);
Titleist 904f 15 degree/19 degree woods with Graphite Design YS-6 stiff shafts (added 15 deg; had 19 deg.)

Irons:
Mizuno MP-60, 4-PW, DG S300 shafts, 2 degrees up;
(replace Ping Eye 2 irons)

Wedges:
Titleist Vokey 200 Chrome 52/08 GW
Ping Eye 2 SW, 55/12
Ping Eye 2 LW, 58.5/8

Putter:
Ping B60 BeCu with Winn oversize pistol grip (changed from standard Ping grip and like it)

Ball:
Ran out of Precept U-TRI Tours. Currently playing sleeves of Titleist Pro V1x that I won at a charity tourney. May end up trying Bridgestone E5+ or Titleist NXT Tours...
