What makes it a ski or board article of clothing?

Oh come on. Take a big step back and really look at ski clothes with a critical eye. They are still being made to the same design standards that started in the 70's: too tight, too shiny, too many bright colors. The vast majority of them still are loud, hideous creations that would look more at home at the circus or on the bridge of the Starship Enterprise than on a ski hill. Snowboard clothes on the other hand are much simpler design wise, color wise, and allow more freedom of movement. I ski, but would never wear most of the junk specifically made for skiers. I'd be afraid to get a ticket from the fashion police.

Fact is, the majority of shops that I have visited just sell jackets/shells/parkas and pants that are suitable for either sport. Matter of fact, my "ski" pants are probably "snowboard" pants, but who can tell. They fit loose, have belt loops and are a tasteful shade of black. Hmm, no padding in the butt though. Maybe they are ski pants. :
