I've been a skateboarder almost as long as I've been a skier. I skied in the winter, and skateboarded, mountainbiked and waterskied in the summer. As a skater and multi-sport athlete, I could never understand most skiers' prejudice against snowboarders; hey, they're just kids out having a good time. It's basically all the same shit anyways, just a different pile. Had I not been a skier first, all those lame, uptight, outdated attitudes from skiers probably would have driven me to be snowboarder instead. (Things are definitely better these days, and the two tribes seem to be getting along better).
I've snowboarded a bit. I caught on to it right away....second run and we hit the halfpipe! Snowboarding is a hell of a lot of fun, and I wish I could try it in deep powder someday. I don't care for doing tricks, whether it be skis, skateboard or snowboard. I like big speed, the rhythm of carving, and the feeling of pulling G's in a hard turn. Basically I like to feel like I'm piloting my own personal roller coaster ride.
So the reason I will always prefer skiing is speed. That's just my thing. You simply cannot go as fast with as much control on a snowboard. If you could, there would be a snowboard race in Kitzbuehel down the Hahnenkamm. (I'd go see that!)The difference between snowboarding and skiing is like the difference between riding motocross and street bikes. Some people prefer to ride bumpy trails, roost the rear tire around the berms, get some air, do some tricks; and yet other people prefer to go mach 1 on a smooth road, screaming through the corners, dragging their knees on the pavement with their elbows just above....it's all good.
