Started skiing in
a) deceased baby brothers old gortex jacket that girlfriend was going to send to StVincent de Paul
b) borrowed gortex shell pants
Lots of layers of fleece & thermals under as needed(or just a wicking layer if it's HOT)
Ski now in same - except I own the shell pants & have a newer shell jacket & a windstopper jacket for really clear days. Can be just a windstopper vest if it is really hot.
Funny thing is - I stay drier & warmer & cooler & less sweaty than most of the posers in the trendy d'hill gear. Now I just refuse to change (got put off when a salesperson looked at me bemused when I asked for the specifications on the fabric).
LM - if you go the gortex shell then there are nice fitted fleece xc pants that make a good warm layer
