I take my straps, hang the pole from my wrists and then hold the strap and the grip at the same time. You can swivel the pole and reach better with no restraint on the wrist . You can even hold the pole, if need be, by the top of the grip .
I think holding the grip while strap hangs over the hand is inviting injury and your range of motion is way less. So i have my straps as long as i can make them. When you lose your balance they move up the wrist and rarely come off
