There's been a lot of interesting discussion on the topics I initially WTF'd???? I appreciate the various views expressed and the thought and effort of each responder. To resolve the issues, please consider the following:

I, and everyone who agreed with me, am right.

Everyone else is wrong.

Moderators, you may now lock this thread.

Goodnight, and good luck.

I can't argue with logic like that, but I'm not sure about the subject verb agreement.

This is a very interesting statement that seems to be clear, but in closer examination, isn't. Who's freedom? For what or from what? And so on. This actually isn't about "freedom" at all.

At some point, for the integrity of the communication on the site (and, therefore, it's value as a communication medium) there must be restrictions on the content of posts changing. As a result, we have picked a generous amount of time to allow folks to edit their posts for typos and grammar, etc. After that, it's part of the communication and edits have a very high likelihood of creating time-based discontinuity.

I agree with Bonni.

We can't edit posts after one hour and now our rights are being violated. What is the world coming to?
Is unlimited editing in the constitution or is it one of those pesky ammendments they tacked on later?I need to pay better attention to capitol politics.I missed that one.
Is there a protest scheduled for this ?

True enough. I just got a little fanciful and hyperbolic to make the point slightly more pointed.

For "^&%$*$" substitute something angry, but not so offensive.

So I just did a long edit, which the stupid system let me start, then it rejected it because I went over the time limit and lost all the typing. Nice!

Sorry, newfydog, but that's an issue with the fundamental technology used on the Web. A web server (in this case the forum system) can't tell whether you're doing something or not. For all it knows, you started the edit but will never finish it. Some folks here have mentioned that they will edit off-line (into a file, for instance) to make sure that they don't lose it. I have been known to copy into a file from the browser windows for this reason myself.

The system can't tell, though, so enforces the specified time limit. I'm sorry that such a situation resulted in lost work. That is always very frustrating. Please know that we have not instituted this approach in order to "hurt" anyone. I'm sorry that you were impacted.
