You asked for it...you got it. A Racing Forum. The paint is still fresh so don't touch it. Sorry about the furniture, it is temporary...we got it from a defunct "hairdressers" forum on the other side of town.

Great! I'll start things off and give you a quick summary of everything I know about race technique, as follows:

That about covers it. I hope I wasn't too wordy.

I will add...

Right....

The Primer ..

Step #1 .. Point skis down the hill; this is critical! :

Step #2 .. Go between the little red thighies and the blue thing-a-mabobs!

Step #3 .. Go real fast!

Step #4 .. The orange fence is not "arresting gear", stop before it.

Most Important!!!!! : Pee before putting on the speed suit. Start refs are not allowed to hold the course for your "potty break".

Nice addition to the EpicSki pantheon of info and noise!

Boo-yah!

Cool. Boo-yah. And good luck!

I think maybe some real furniture, a functioning beer tap and a bouncer. But all in good time.

Ok, lets bring out some of the racing fossils. We used to have three colours for the gates. What was the third colour (note how Canadian I'm becomming eh?), what order they come in, and when was it dropped? I'm not sure I can get the third one right.

We finally got it going. I am looking forward to the discussions that will take place here.

BTW, the third color was yellow I think...

What was the 3rd colour used for? Super-wacky double delays or something?
Yellow it was! Slalom races had yellow to go with the red and blue.

Did the yellow follow the red or the blue gate? (this was an actual FIS rule)

They still get used in Ascutney's antique ski race.

Yep! I think it was eliminated in 1971. I don't recall one word of protest. Sure made it easier to set a course.

It was a "caution" gate wasn't it?

I think it was just part of the sequence :
RED RED

YELLOW YELLOW

BLUE BLUE
RED

RED

don't eat yellow gates.

The white zone is for loading and unloading only.

I finally found some colour photos. The Mariellle Goitschell one looks like we may have the sequence wrong.

Oh yeah...they were regular gates, had nothing to do with caution.

You're not seeing every gate in the color photo.

Look at the color one to associate the shapes on the top of the gates with colors:
Pyramid = Blue
Cube with vertex down (almost looks like a sphere) = Yellow
Cylinder = Red.

Now look at the B&W photo directly below, where she's in a flush and you can clearly see every gate in sequence:
Yellow cube
Blue pyramid
Red cylinder

Personally, I treat all gates with a certain amount of caution.

Also see the video of the Goitschel sisters, with color footage from the 1964 Olympics: Red-Yellow-Blue.

Plus it's kind of a cool video. If you slow it down (to look at the gate colors, of course), the announcer sounds like he's got a barbituate problem.

I hadn't seen the videos. I had that French team sweater as a kid. Great stuff.

Thanks for confirming the sequence. Pretty pathetic if you can't answer your own trivia questions.
