The first step in this viedo, why the guy scraping the ski without hot waxing it. I thought it would be better to put on a cheap wax and while it is hot, scrape the wax off.

In the sticky at the top of this thread, SMJ (post #2) suggests that p-tex hairs can be removed by scraping before the cleansing hot wax / scrape. That's a great sticky for the basics of tuning.

trochilds, thanks for the kind words.

I watched the video and wouldn't use it as a guide.

1. He doesn't wait for the ptex to get hot and start dripping it - bad. You should allow it to burn until the flame is blue and the ptex is running not coming off in drops.
2. Uses metal scraper poorly to remove ptex
3. Seems to be pressing down with the iron. Should apply a slight upwards pull on it to avoid burning the base.
4. Spells "very" wrong

I'm being a bit picky, but they are your skis.

Find a copy of "Fast Tuning" video, it's much better. Got to buy it though.

Read things on tognar.com

Lots of good info out there. This kid really isn't that bad, but just isn't a model of best practices - so to speak.

Use a longer bench.

Remove wax from edges while it's still soft.

Scrape wax with a plexi scraper, not metal.

Use a brush after scraping instead of a ScotchBrite pad.

Hold the ptex closer to the ski so that the flame is never orange and warms the ski base also. Don't breathe on it.

scraper should span both edges and be sharp enough to be angled away from the direction of pull, otherwise it might chisel into the base.

anybody have any idea where to get the Toolsmith bench he's using in this video?

I Googled Toolsmith but their website seems to be down

I also thought that when melting in the wax with the iron, you shouldn't be moving at right angles to the ski as he is many times in this video. Shouldn't all motions be tip to tail?

Plus I wish the kid had a more stable bench so the ski wasn't getting rocked so often. That CAN'T be good!
