Trip Report : Rusutsu, Japan

I realise most of the posts here are North American orientated but thought I'd share something from another part of the world. I recently spent 12 days skiing in Rusutsu end of February to early March.

Stayed in Rusutsu, about an hours drive from Sapporo on Japans north island of Hokkaido. The resort comprises of 3 mountains linked by Gondola & when I arrived had a base of about 300cm.

The first few days we were skiing it was really warm, too warm actually. The snow held up fairly well but unfortunately it rained for a day half way through our stay. Needless to say I was pretty gutted at this point. I didnt bother skiing the next day as it had gotten quite cold again & turned the whole mountain to sheet ice.

Luckily it started snowing & by the next morning I was in a winter wonderland. It wasnt snowing very heavily but it was just constant. Spent the morning on marked trails, skiing knee deep powder & I practically had it to myself. Visibility was atrocious but this was a small sacrifice to keep the crowds away. After lunch I moved into the trees where I was still getting fresh tracks the next day. Zero lift queues as well was the icing on the cake. In fact the longest I had to wait any day was probably a minute tops.

All in all it was a great trip. Powder wasnt as deep as I was fantasising about but I still had a ball. I'll keep this on the short side but pics below should provide more of a review than my words.

Have included some pics & short video of me in the trees if youve got nothing better to do. Was tempted to edit out some of the sloppy skiing but thought people would be more interested in seeing the scenery than the chump blocking the view

Nicely done. I liked the Japanese music, and Model Bro? Skis really make the setting . Seriously, the skiing was fine, and its interesting to see stuff from the land far far away. How did you end up in Japan for skiing? A bottle of wine, and the scene with the strato volcano in the background is perfect. Nice that you were able to get to the Northern Hemisphere to put in some turns during our winter. Hope I can reciprocate someday.

I read this trip report yesterday... thanks for posting it. Lovely pictures too. Hokkaido is taking over as a popular playground for Australians... Narita airport is about 9 hours flight from eastern oz, versus 14 to LA.
