Very sore shins...damn

I was hoping someone could help me out. I got new boots back in Nov. and have skied 30 days on them. In the first part of the season, they felt great. But in the last month or so I've been getting sore shins after skiing on them, esp. when I hit moguls or jumps. Usually if I ski Sat, the soreness will appear late in the day, and then on Sunday, it will feel real bad when I put the boots back on. I've had to cut a few days short b/c when I would hit a bump, the pain was too much to have fun. It goes away during the week, but then reappears when I ski hard. Also, there's no bruise or any discoloration on my shin...thoughts?

Jeff, I think you need to see a good boot fitter. Hopefully they could figure out the problem. Your second choice is to listen to various Bears tell their stories. So, you might as well start with me. I had the same problem with my Langes,which I had custom foamed last year. My solution was to install Booster straps and put them INSIDE the cuff. This caused the pressure on my shins to be distributed evenly top to bottom along my shin. I also ground off about 1/4 inch of the bottom of the lower cuff strap. This allowed the boot to flex more smoothly. Before I did that the lower cuff would hit the instep of the boot and quit flexing abruptly.

Problem is, what worked for me may have no relevance to your problem. Short of going to a bootfitter, I would start with Booster Straps.

PS, Where do you live in Denver? I work at ListenUp, near Wash Park. Lee Kinney at The Custom Foot might be able to help you. He used to work by appointment out of the Mtn Miser near Broadway and Hampden. The Mtn. Miser closed, but he now has a shop somewhere in the same area. He foamed and fit my boots, which was quite a challenge.

Getting pain in that tendon at the front of the ankle where the foot transitions to the shin? There are two possible sources. One is actual impact or abrasion with the boot. This usually leaves a mark. The second comes from straining the ligaments when you dorsiflex (pull up) your foot to balance your weight.

I would suspect this latter cause because it usually happens when your boots have packed out and no longer give you support at the instep. As a result, you pull forward (dorsiflex) from the ankle when you get in the backseat. This puts tremendous strain on the muscles and ligaments as you try to lever your body weight into a balanced forward position. Try flexing your foot upward and feel the ligament that pops up. Is that where the pain is?

If this is the problem, the best cure for this type of shin bang is to install Booster Straps or purchase new tighter boots. I had the problem in some Salomon Xwave boots that were too large, and never got the boots to fit right. It takes a while for the inflammation injury to heal.

Bruises? Get booster straps, or tighten the buckles and straps you have.

If its inside, Push your hands forward and GET OUT OF THE BACK SEAT!

If your boots are sloppy, it's a hopeless cause.
