The Park Record....The Park Record Blog...

Those of you who live in PC, have you all been reading the blog entries that are being published in The Park Record, there is some very funny stuff and it really is a good representation of our community.

This is by far the best (discussion on our housing issues):

Seasonal Worker said... It seems to me by the nature of your conversations, that many of you Parkites believe that you are better than us 'the J-1 workers'. You need to understand that we spend thousands of dollars to come here and we are not here because we need your money or jobs. You need us to be here or your seasonal based economy would collapse. We are here for the experience, to better our English, and above all to have fun. Affordability is not the main issue as most of come from families that are as wealthy or wealthier than the average person in Park City. Instead, all we want are places to live where we can access the places of work, grocery stores and night clubs. If there is to be employee housing, it must be in Park City as most of us would never in a million years live in Heber or Kamas as we are acustomed to a higher level of amenities than exist there. For you that are offended by us 'starnge people' living close to you, walking on your streets, and injecting thousands of dollars into your local economy - GET OUT OF YOUR LITTLE NARROW-MINDED BUBBLE and begin to enjoy the experience of having cultured people living amongst you. You could learn a lot from us about living life and not stressing so much. To the rest of you who have been so nice and warm to us - Thank you, we recognize your kindness.

Then there's this reply. I think this is a worthy conversation for the Epic community at large, since we probably have representatives from both contingents.

I hate to break this to you (um, no I don't) but seasonal work in Park City ain't skilled labor. All you resort workers gotta wise up and realize you're not indispensable. I caution you to hop off your high horses because there will always be people willing to drive from Heber, SLC and Coalville to fill these 'key' 'high level' lift-operating, snowplowing and bread bowl-making positions. 'Cultured' people from South America and Aussie are fine but by no means necessary.

Not everyone in Park City is a silverspooner/trustafarian. Some people actually worked for what they have and much of it didn't involve bong hits in bathrooms at The Canyons.

Don't want to respec

Don't want to respect property rights? Don't want to adhere to a free market? Want to damage other people's rights so the lazy among us can have a leg up? Move to Cuba -- I hear there is lots of affordable housing there. Freedom, however, is in short supply.

Can't afford to live in Park City -- tough! Get educated, make more money or find somewhere else to live. That's what most people do.

Thanks.

p.s. those slopes better be groomed when I get there!

What the original quoted poster said. They think we are Mexicans. We ain't. We pay to come here. We pay to be here. We inject money, we bring money. We are not poor indigent people groveling for your knickels.
We are here by choice. When we choose not to be here any more, then you have a problem.
You pay peanuts, you get monkeys.

Let me see if I understand this...

The seasonal employees are saying that they are wealthy, cultured, pay to come to PC and work, and spend their money in PC.

The PC natives, or year-rounders, are saying that their amenities (great skiing) are so great that they can pay low wages and still staff all the jobs they have.

Do I have this right? It seems easy enough to prove. Pay the lowest wage legally and see what happens. If you can staff your operation, then there's enough cheap labor available. If not, then you'll have to pay more. Simple economics. I assume that the PC employers are still making it through the day, so they must have found the right wage level to attract the level of talent they need. The seasonal workers have the option to work at many other ski areas if they think they can live better at those areas. Sounds hard hearted, but that's capitalism.

They are quoting the "seasonal worker" as saying, "we are not here because we need your money or jobs..." Fine, then don't work, just ski.

WHAT????????

You want to gain respect from a group of people by stating that! Probably one of the most offensive things I have read here.

Please tell me that not all people from Australia think that all Mexican or Mexican-Americans are, "Poor indigent people groveling for your nickels".

I don't grovel for anything............................

There is a HUGE Aussie contingent here in town for seasonal work. They work as lift operators mostly. A pretty good group.

Our latino population is really the backbone of the labor force here in PC and I don't know one local (year round resident) that complains about them, I don't know anyone that isn't grateful they are here.

And to think just two weeks ago I was in the ski shop right next to the gondola listen to two of the clerks (one with an Aussi accent) talking about how racist Americans are!!!!
