Anyone else on here stoked for the Wold Cup this year? I look forward to it more than I do the superbowl, summer olympics, and winter olympics combined. There is no other sport like the Beautiful Game.

Yes, I agreed, it's once in four years for this world cup. Just can't wait to see it get started and who will be the winner

suppose you're talking about football... also called soccer in places where it's not played

I really hope the U.S. has a strong showing this year. But if they don't, I'm rootin' for Germany.

I'd be very surprised if Germany has a strong team this year.. they seem to have reached that point again where the old players are too old and the young ones too inexperienced.
I'm betting on another 'underdog' (remember Greece?)

Can't Wait!!

I am really looking forward to this Word Cup! We are ranked 5th! Is it deserving? Can The U.S. handle that kind of pressure? I look forward to seeing what happens!

Not sure if any of you were keeping track, but the U.S. Men's team lost to Germany 4-1 today during a friendly match. We were missing serveral key players, though, including Landon Donovan and Brian McBride, so the game wasn't a true measure of the U.S. Not suprisingly, Oliver Kahn and Michael Ballack both stood out in their performances for Germany. Damn I wish Ballack played for the U.S.

I was just going to post the same thing! You are right, we didn't have half our team, but yikes! It sounds like we got pounded! Not exactly the taste you want in your mouth as the most important tournament in U.S. soccer history is about to begin. Well, it at least told us who does not need to be on our team!

Anyone ...

Ever been to a World Cup game? I got a chance to go to the quarterfinals in the 1990 World Cup at Giants Stadium. Germany vs. Bulgaria. Bulgaria won in a classic. It was a great experience!

Wasn't that 1994? I saw Saudi Arabia beat Belgium, in Wash, DC. It was fun, except I had a cold, complete with fever, and I was pregnant and couldn't take any medicine. Blech. Luckily our seats were on the shady side of RFK.

Will it be properly broadcasted in the US ?

To be honest I don't have too much interest in league football but working in an international office with people from many countries (inc England, France, America, Italy & Germany) it always generates a lot of friendly rivalry.

Had to laugh in 2002 as one of the French guys was really confident that his National side would do well after their 1998 win. He even hung up a French football shirt over his desk. It didn't stay up for long though

Of course England will probably beat top teams like Brazil only to get knocked out by someone like Cameroon :

Agreed. Football is not my favorite sport either, and I follow it very loosely.
But the world cup is something else...
(and yes, the frennch team of 2002 was a disgrace. Now, can't we move along... )

Wow!

Forgive me for my earlier gaff! It was 1994! It is pretty bad when you don't remember the year you graduated college! Oh well, It was still enjoyable! One of you mentioned the England losing to Cameroon. I always picture the same thing for the American side. We can get by the teams we are supposed to get by, but the heavyweights? Maybe this year will be different. I will cheer for them, but I also won't be surprised when we get knocked out.

PhilippeR,

Properly broadcast in the U.S. ? Doubt it!

Well, I only remembered because I definitely remember being pregnant, and I'm sure my oldest child is only 11, not 15.

actually.... germany won in 1990, they couldn't have gotten knocked out .

don't know about the US.. as long as it's called soccer, football is not really their sport

forget the TV coverage.

No, not 1990 but 1994 was when Germany got knocked out in the Q-finals. We couldn't believe it because it was the first time in who knows how long that Germany had been knocked out in regulation in a really long time. Nonetheless, it was a very entertaining game and the most of the fans, (including the Germans) were celebrating the Bulgaria victory!

Did anyone see Coach Arena say it was a mistake for the U.S. side to play Germany this past week? After a 4-1 pounding I guess there wasn't much else for him to say!
