Philly Bears: Corn Snow Classic at Elk April 1-2

Okay Philly Bears, I don't really know how Elk is getting the U.S. ski team to show up but several members will be in attendance on April 1-2 up at Elk for a fund raising event. You can read the story here: http://cornsnowclassic.com/press.php and the main site is here: http://cornsnowclassic.com/

Anyway is anyone interesting in going up for the day? The skiing may be bad but it would be fun just for the sites.

I'm in! I'm on the phone with Phil right now, he's probably not going to make it, the wifes' knee is pretty bad. He will be taking care of her for a while.

If I can get in a few runs myself, without having to donate $500 for the privilege, I'm there!

When I spoke ot the esteemed Mr. Pa Ridge Racer at Elk this past weekend, he said he's planning to attend this also.

No real preference for either day, so I'll probably go Saturday.

It looks like the ski team will be racing both days but it looks like there is a party on saturday if we plan on sticking around that long, though I doubt I will but who knows. So how does saturday sound for everyone? This should be fun as Ted Ligety will be in attendance as well as Lindsey Kildow and some others. It'd be nice for the drunk P.R. machine to be there himself but I guess this event is beneath him, oh well it will be better to see a gold medal winner anyway.

That party in the bar would be kinda fun to go to. But to actually run elbows and press the flesh with the ski team members, you have to cough up what I heard is a hefty donation to get into the private party area, link. They have some cool clinics though. For young kids into racing, this is great stuff.

I've always wanted to mountain bike (in shorts, that's important) and ski a few runs . . . in Pennsylvania in the same day. This sounds like the perfect opportunity. Maybe Carbondale/Fell Mt in the morning and Elk for a few runs in the PM. Anybody interested?

It's still early but as of right now the forcast looks pretty nasty both days (rain, ice etc.) Sunday might be the better (weather wise) of the two days. Hopefully this forecast will change.

I would be up for that if I get my new bike in time. That sounds like a lot of fun.

Considering that it may be cold, wet or muddy, why wait on a new bike?

Whatsup for Saturday? Weather looks like it might not be too bad at Elk accoridng to the local forecast for that area. I woud like to go but I don't want it to be too crappy. Anyone ski there this week? I had a great last day at Blue and want to go out on a high note- Like Castanza (any Seinfeld fans?)

I'm planning to get there in the early morning. A report on PaSkiandRide from yesterday says things are holding up well in the AM.

Ski for a few hours, maybe until about 11 or 12, and then go somewhere else and get a bike ride in for an hour or so. If I do the ride locally will come back for whatever's going on in the bar at 4:00. Times somewhat tentative right now.

Merli -Sarnoski county park is being butchered. They're doing "selective harvesting". I have a couple of pics to show the devistation. Here's a link to the pics and a small discussion about the mess. http://forums.mtbr.com/showthread.php?t=177097 Despite what IMBA Pete has to say, This isn't a matter of coming back after a forest fire. There is something called prevention! That's what we want to do. I can go on for hours about this. I'll be up Elk on Sunday. If anybody wants to talk to me about Merli-Sarnoski (aka Fell Mtn.) Please stop in the patrol building at the top of the mtn and ask for Rob. If I'm not there I'll have a motorolla radio set at channel 4 code 11. Please sign this online petition http://www.petitiononline.com/100041/petition.html and pass this news to your riding buddies and any local bike shops that travel the distance. Please include your locatoin you travel from and the time it takes to get here. Thanks, and I hope WE can save this Heroes Park. Rob Gregory ps. links to describe why WE refer to this park as "A Heroes Park" http://www.kensmen.com/ http://www.homeofheroes.com/moh/cita...i_a_merli.html

I just read that about Merli -Sarnoski today on MTBR. What a mess, wish I could have been at that "meeting to seek public comments" they had.

Haven't been in there since last fall, please say not the entire park/mountain is affected, . . . is it?
