Need Advice On ski Length

I took a demo on a pair of 170 cM Volkl AC4, the 05-06 silver model. I took a demo on the Volkl AC4 06-07 model, the red one. I like the feel of both, I took the 170 in the tight trees it seemed fine, did not get the chance on the 177 but it worked fine through the crud.

price is always part of it, but the 170 I like better, the 07 seems to thick. But I am considering the 177 in the 05-06 model versus the 170 in the 05-06 model. Since i never skied the 05-06 model in 177 I am not sure if I will like that length in the 05-06 model, but the length seems maybe just a bit short on the 170. I am 5' 9" at 215 and have skied for 45 years, mostly on longer stuff. Anyone tried the 170 and 177 both in the 05-06 model?

sounds like you got some more demoing to do.try a search on this model , many have reviewed the ac 4 and there is alot to read before you make any decision on this ski

I'm your size, and I find the AC4 in a 177cm to be manageable. I would find the 170cm to be too small at speed and in softer snow.

Cheers,

I am 6' 180 lbs and I ski the 06 AC4 in a 177cm. I find it to be very light, lively and easy to ski... yet it carves great turns at all speeds (both long and short) in just about any condition. Killer crud buster and even does a decent job in soft bumps.

A 170cm AC4 would be out of the question for my needs. For me the 177cn is plenty quick in tight spots, floats nicely in new snow and carves nearly as well as my carving ski. I would be afraid the 170cm AC4 wouldn't have the stability at speed and float for a guy your size.

One thing I find somewhat unique to the AC4 is the ease of turning at slow speeds for a ski that is so stable a high speed. I haven't skied another ski that does this as well in this length of ski. I even think I could possibly be happy with a 184cm in most soft snow conditions. The AC4 isn't all that demanding IMO.

Great ski!

Perfect Information

That is perfect information, Pretty much everything I wanted to know is right there, the only thing you did not say is you ability, but from you answer I assume your pretty good. I will be buying the 177 CM from that information. I just wanted to hear from someone who actually skied them. I can't wait to check them out. Thanks so much for the advice

I am a level 8 skier. I would highly recommend trying the 170-177-184cm before you buy if you can. If you can't, the 177cm would be the safest bet IMO. YMMV

Good luck and enjoy!

As long as you are sticking with the '05-'06, you won't likely go wrong with the 177. If you DO decide to wait for the '07 (they are lurking around now) then I'd suggest a demo because it is a very different ski and it is reasonably likely that a 170 would be enough ski for you.

I'm pretty sure we shared a chair on Sunday... we compared airline ticket prices from Florida and California... was that you? Nice day eh? Gotta say the AC4's were perfect for those conditions. Are you going to be up there at the end of the month? I will be back in two weeks by myself... would be great to hook up for a few turns.

Funny you mention the poles...

Ironically, I broke one of those very poles on the run following our ride up with you guys. I didn't even fall. I went through some trees, hit a few bumps and ran out to Sultan... When I got in line I noticed about 4 inches of my pole was missing. Looked like somebody cut it off with hacksaw.

I'm trying to move back to PC this summer. I will be looking at property March 30th. We'll get some next year!

Great meeting you and your wife! BTW my wife rides the AC2. A little scary eh?
