OK, I"M CONFUSED, again

For the past 2 seasons I have been maintaining my edges and the base of the edges with dmt diamond stones every other day out. I check the sharpness of the edges and the hold on hard pack (when it is) and occasionall ice (not often) is good. Now I have decided to move up to Moonflex stones and fixed guides. Currently using base and edge adjustable guide. I read frequently that many do not stone the base of their edges at all. Why? I was anticipating buying a Beast base guide for the moonflex but already ordered the 2.75inch size and don't know if it will be long enough in the Beaset, (product description says use at least 4in stone). So should I forget about stoning the base of the edges and forget about the Beast and the longer Moonflex or not? Oh, I am a recreational skier. I do my own tuning and waxing cause I enjoy it as part of the total skiing experience.
Thanks in advance for some clarity.

I use a course stone to take down burrs or other hardened spots on the edge, then I file the side edge with a guide if it needs that, and finish by using diamond stones on the base and side edges. I don't usually use a file in the base because it takes off too much material, which results in a high, round base that needs to be flattenned. If the base edge needs to be filed, I usually have the bases ground at a shop.

Bode, thanks, but do I need to get a base bevel guide to go over the bases with a moonflex or other stone? Several on this site say no and several say yes. I am not asking about filing. And if I get the Beast base bevel guide do I also need to get the 4 inch stone or will it work with the smaller 2.75 inch stone. I understand all the stuff about filing the bases. I guess that since I am only deburing the base edge I could continue using the adjustable beveling tool that I have at 1 degree and use the fixed guide on the edges. Maybe I am making too much of this process for a recreational skier?:

The reason not to sharpen the base is so you don't wear it down. You can get it plenty sharp enough just sharpening the side edge, like a pair of scizors.

When I first sharpened my new skis, after a few days out on them, I tried a bit of the edge with a medium stone in the guide, noticed that I had made it duller, not sharper, and proceded to buy a fine stone. The fine stone made it sharper, but it was barely noticeable to the (back of ) finger nails. The difference was very apparent on the snow however.

I say sharpen the sides a little with a fine stone every other day or so, and get the base edges done with the base grind when you get a full tune.

Repairing damage is another story.
