I was studying my manuals like a good boy! E-mailed Tiomberline, got the app, filled it out, and found out froom Terrie (wife) we didn't have the money!
: She really tried with the budget, but we were short on cash, rent due, etc. - The usual drill. Really bummed out about it. At hoodoo it was a free tryout. At Timberline you pay $140 to tryout! Hoodoo- 3 hour drive, $38. if you make it. T-Line- 1.5 hour drive, $140. no matter what. They gitcha comin' and goin'! I might call one of the rinky-dink places like Coopers Spur or something.
I used to be an auto mechanic years ago, ASE certified and all. I could reach, blindfolded, into any given drawer, any side and know what tool I would touch before I touched it. I figured that customers were paying me to work on their cars, not look for my tools. That's how I have the shop set up. What really takes time right now is looking for the right stuff. Grab a ski, then major search for the bindings and boots. There's so much stuff and so little room.
In the past we always had a to do area and a done area. This year I've found this all mixed up! Right now I'm the only game in town who knows how to fit boots, sell skis, etc. When I'm not working, sh*t happens. Sometimes if the cusotmer has his own boot, whoever filled out the form doesn't put down the name or style of boot, but luckily it has the tag number on it. Still, it would be nice to know that I'm looking for a Nordica with that number and not a salomon, or other.
The other day I found some stuff in which the bindings sold instantly set off a warning light in my head. When I checked the DIN specs, sure enough, the little tyke's specs were 1.5 and the bindings lowest DIN was 2.5!!! Then there's the guy's boots which looked like he plowed the south forty with them. Testing was just outside the in-use range. I gently sanded down the boot sole at the ball of the foot, checked it with a gaged and retested. It passed, finally.
Also, Spyder, I have to go on the floor and sell or answer the phone, or mess with someone at the gun counter. lately we have only one person in each department. I'm ion outdoors which is guns, fishing, camping, ski & board, golf. Imagine trying to drill skis and you get a call or you have to go sell something. This what I have to put up with. Higher-up (corporate office of Gart) has cut back hours so badly, sometimes there's no one in one or more of the departments; and this as a compnay that prides itself on customer service. We do that very well but can't lately because fo the cut backs in hours!
Now... I can sell the Pope a double bed if I'm not called away to 3 other customers! I can handle a few at a time, but here I'm helping someone with boots, and I get a phone call from another store to find something for them then transfer it - takes time- or go find something in the warehouse or look up a sku for cashiers. I get back and the people are gone and no skis got mounted either.
I got to work last night at 5, closed at 9, left at 10. All of the above happened and I got 7 skis out.
Two years ago we had a tech who got out 17 skis in one eight hour shift. That's nice! But he wasn't interupted with all of the above either.
I like your idea of drilling many then testing. I'll try that. I did two pair last night which were due way back on the 6th! They were elated their stuff was done. That's another thing i don't like... In the past techs would get stuff done but not call the customer! "Oh, they'll come in eventually," is what I'd hear! what's the matter with people these days?
Proper waxing takes time, but what i do in waxing would cost at least $30 with the time involved so I do the best I can. We do have that stupid wax machine (the one you drag the ski across) but that does very little.
Anyway, that's my sob story. I go in again Wed. I think I'll go in early and do a little rearranging. I'm down to about 20-25 minutes drill, test, wax. That's in the ballpark at least.
Any other ideas, let me know. I'll keep you posted if I get any progress on teaching. yep, I'll keep studying! If I don't, Spyder will kick my butt!
