funny- Intrawaste's hideous Garden state abortion: "Mountain Creek" is due to close, altogether, on the 19th, while it's far superior, old-school section, "South", is due to close this coming sunday
The Reason? they buy their electrical useage in seasonal blocks, and their winter rate ends on March 1st. Were they to have had a highly profitable season, and see projections of actual snowfall in the upcoming weeks (the average NYC area customer only 'thinks snow' when it's covering their yard. they are largely ignorant of the fact that freezing temps and high-pressure snowmaking systems produce excellent snow anytime it's below 32o F), they'd keep blowing and stay open later. They're more than aware, after many years, that NJ skiing, as each winter becomes dryer and warmer is not at all profitable, and they're hurriedly planning their corporate retreat across the border.
Where to ski?
Me and the better half have been enjoying an inauspicious, professional resort which has been blowing HUGE volumes of snow all season, and which intenmds to stay open right into April, and which has two excellent race-pitch runs amongst it's features.
Right on the bellvale mountain ridge overlooking Warwick, NY (in Orange County, about 5 minutes from my house) , is Mt. Peter, where we've spent the past two long, sunny days with the runs pretty much to ourselves....indeed, yesterday AM, we made about a dozen runs without seeing another person en piste. There was excellent, well set-up corduroy everywhere, and we burned our skin brown out on the western-exposed snow.
I hadn't been on that hill in over thirty years until Tuesday, and, man- what a kickass, private-club, fresh-blown/fresh-groomed experience THAT was!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I belive the lift-tickets are very inexpensive, as well.
If you're in the greater NYC/Bergen/Passaic/Rockland/Westchester/Orange County area, stop in at this place- they'll be open into April. (mtpeter.com)
