I was at Vail last week (on break from school), and the conditions were excellent. Unfortunately, there was very little new snow (while there), but a previous snowfall left just enough in the less traveled areas (all the front side chutes, northwest bowl, lovers leap/steep and deep [blue sky]). The weather was fantastic--I never had to put on more than a sweatshirt and the sun perpetually shone (my otherwise unexposed face is practically falling off at this point). Lift lines were surprisingly short, even for the sometimes unavoidable popular lifts (11, 4, etc). Leaving was difficult, as my uncle is selling a condo acquired almost thirty years ago (before the era of one million two bedroom house), and I doubt I will be going back anytime soon. Vail, to my despair at times, does not have (to my knowledge) any "dedicated" steeps, but for those of you who may visit in the near future, the front side stuff (mudslide, pump house) was in better shape than it's been in the past, and they make for pretty fun runs. As expected, the lift ticket price is a real killer, but I am still covered by the financial blanket of an (ending) childhood.
