(Cheap emergency alternative) I was on a trip out of the country where the snow was not good on area but there was lots of good off area hike-to skiing. I had not anticipated this so I did not have a pack for carrying my skis when hiking. I used the padded shoulder strap from my duffel bag and it worked great. One end looped around the front part of the skis and the other end clipped to my ski brake. With the strap slung over one shoulder (like carring a duffel bag) I was able to hike in relative comfort for an hour at a time, including climbing some 45 degree pitches. It was not the best setup but actually worked pretty well and allowed me to use both poles while climbing. It was no substitute for a G-string, but sometimes you gotta go with what you got.
