Bode's Gear

In a large photograph in Tuesday 02/21/06 USA today shows Bode's GS12's , are clearly Beta construction and that he is using Booster Straps on his boots. For those of you who were going try to tell me he switched skis for the pic, the skis are stiil on his feet at the end of a GS run in the finish area, and his boots are fully buckled.

Usually he has the booster hidden under his speed suit!

His skis looked very wide on TV last night, probably over 70mm at the waist, if they were 190's.
I could see the beta construction during his run on TV. On some turns you could get a good angle to see it.

As for the booster straps.... he appears in print ads endorsing them. Did someone say he didn't use them?

I don't think so. That plate is 60mm wide (unless they redisgned the WC plate) and I can see in the pic there is not another 5mm+ per side of ski showing under plate. Could be 65-68mm though.

he always hides them, and is shown with retail boots in any photos.

I knew you'd like that one. I stole it from Vlad's thread about Phil Mahre skiing Volkls with K2 topsheets.

I skied Atomics when I raced alot not so much because of their performance, they were awesome though, but because the shop I worked at and skied for gave them to me at cost.

If I were to race alot I'd be on them again no doubt. I just like the feel of Rossi's.

Either that or I'm into necrophelia.

I could see the booster strap straps flapping above his boot cuffs last night. Mine are the same way with a good bit of excess strap after tightening. I noticed the Atomics they showed at the finish had a metal strip on the tip. I wondered if these were the same skis that he raced on. Raich's were the same, I can't remember if Maier's were as well. It's unfortunate he didn't medal . Good to see Maier medal though. Poster boy for True Grit for sure. Nice recovery at the top of the course as well.

No those were the retail model they give them after the race on the podium or "Near it"

Great to see hermann do it! I love that guy!!!!

They said something about Bode's DH skis that these were the only pair in the world. Judging by his - and Daron Rahvles' - results in DH, it looks like he got a Trojan horse from Austria... (A conspiracy theory, heh-heh)

Actually, I think they were Air Jordans...

there were actually 2 pair, but rahlves didn't ski on the new ski. Austria was offered 1 pair & US one pair. Austrians declined to try a new ski just before the race. so bode and Rahlves got a pair.

But only bode skied on them!
Aha! So the Austrians knew! Actually, Rahvles raced on them in the DH, I think...

No, he changed back to his usual skis minutes before going out of the gate. Covered by NBC.

Here's a question:

How long will Nike keep running the ads of Bode lecturing us on how he doesn't care about medals?

Given that Bode is 99.5% likely to be shut out of these games (yes, I'm generous to give him a .5% chance to actually not DNF the final slalom event), I wonder if Nike really doesn't care if a sponsored athlete drops into oblivion (i.e. only televised by OLN and watched by us few ski freaks who in the aggregate won't justify one commercial's cost).

As a skier, I love to watch Bode ski. I just wish he'd grow / shut up.

SRH: from the looks of it Bode's 15 minutes is just about up

Sorry to hijack for a bit but I'm curious:
Does Atomic give some kind of incentive to ski shops to push their race skis?
Our local shop has 4 different brands but most of the ski racers around here are on atomics. When my friend went looking for volkl p60's(last year), the shop had a few in stock, but really pushed her to the atomics. She ended up getting the volkls she wanted but she had to be very insistant. When I went into the shop to look for a demo ski this year, I noticed he had tons of atomic race skis and only a few race tigers.

Since Atomic is the winningest race ski in history, (even though what the shops sell & what the WC racers use are dissimilar) wouldn't you have alot of them in your shop?

Atomic does not & does not have to pay to have their skis represented. In fact when it comes to sponsoring younger athletes they are quite close to the vest shall we say.

Volkl race skis have had a reoutation to be something lwess then durable in the last few years, although maybe somewhat better recently. there was a time a few years ago (maybe 5-7) that they were down right fragile with lousy tip protectors!

Bode's gear?? H'mm maybe a six pack and a ring of BALONEY !!
Simple answer: Atomic makes a darn good race ski for all levels of retail and stock. Others do also, but you need to demo to determine what suits your style and touch.

I suspect many racers (myself included) have come to trust the Atomic race line to be very competitive at any given level, so why try to fix something that ain't broke and spend a lot of time demoing and tweaking?

I can be quite the kidder, but......In reference to my real question:
I didn't believe that Atomic would have an aggressive "jr racer" program, but I wondered if (either) atomic, or it's reps gave some kind of incentive to the Shop Owners for pushing their product. For instance, I heard through the grapevine that a shop owner could earn "points" of some sort toward a dealer show or demo days. I also heard that Volkl had a similar program but didn't benifit the shop owners to the same degree, hence.....Sell more atomic race skis and get a free ticket to a dealer show.

Any body ever heard of that?

I think Rhalves made a good choice , I would never ski a race on a pair of skis that i just bought. Especially a DH race, and a race of that importance. **OLYMPICS**Cool story.... I was at Okemo about at month ago , and the Atomic demo van was there, My friend Andy and I were talkin to him about demoing some skis before the afternoon session of practice started. In his van he pulled out a pair of GS 12's. They are such a clean looking ski, Unfortunatly he couldnt let us demo them , pulling them out was even to much he said. I guess he took them out of the shop before anyone else got there and took off. Just wanted to give my opinion of the ski.
