the question tossed around is why do you grab your board, while in the air?
i do it especially for bigger airs, because it forces me to get low in the air (legs flexed) and helps keep me focused on spotting and timing my landing.
Stabilizing is a big part of grabbing, but there are a lot of grabs and ways of contorting your body that are totally for show and feel. As you progress, more of the show/feel grabs become stabilizing. In fact, once you are comfortable with a lot of grabs, you can hit a jump and wait until you feel the jump out to see what you want to grab. There are often times when good riders go into a jump thinking of one trick, but feel the jump (or miscalculate the takeoff) and then decide to throw another.
Depending on how the jump is set up, there are, what I will call, natural and less than natural grabs. For example, in the pipe, frontside airs are usually easier to grab with your trailing hand while backside airs are usually easier to grab with the front hand. Spines, quarterpipes and other kinds of jumps all present their own set of natural and less than natural moves.
Lindsey's grab was not a stabilizing grab, but it also did not destabilize her as much as people think.
As she came out of the last berm, she looked uphill. This allowed her to drift to the left. This drift continued off of the jump. She was not traveling down the hill in the air, but down and to the left. Her problem came when she tried to put the board down. If you notice, she set it down pointed down the hill - which does not work when you are not traveling straight down the hill. In fact, if you notice, she had to extend her front leg to get the board to point that way. So she lands with her board straight down the hill, but she is traveling a little to the left - the perfect recipe for an edge catch to mouse trap.
If she hadn't drifted, she could have had a straight line off of the jump and the method would not have messed her up - or, if she was drifting and had not pulled the method, she also most likely would not have messed up. She did both, she went down, she won silver. She still rocks.
